Apps developed with the Qt SDK 1.1 Beta are now being accepted into the $10 million (USD) Calling All Innovators North America contest presented by AT&T and Nokia. Qt SDK 1.1 Beta apps will be accepted into the Ovi Publish intake system, and they will receive a special acknowledgement advising that they have been received and will be held for publishing until the SDK is commercially available. Once the SDK is finalized, submitted apps will be processed for distribution in Ovi Store. There, developers can reach consumers using 100 million Qt-enabled devices — of which 75 million are touch-enabled. And looking ahead, Nokia plans to sell 150 million more Symbian devices, including new devices with enhanced features.

Nokia and Microsoft intend to jointly create market-leading mobile products and services designed to offer consumers, operators and developers unrivalled choice and opportunity. As each company would focus on its core competencies, the partnership would create the opportunity for rapid time to market execution. Additionally, Nokia and Microsoft plan to work together to integrate key assets and create completely new service offerings, while extending established products and services to new markets.

Under the proposed partnership:

- Nokia would adopt Windows Phone as its principal smartphone strategy, innovating on top of the platform in areas such as imaging, where Nokia is a market leader.

- Nokia would help drive the future of Windows Phone. Nokia would contribute its expertise on hardware design, language support, and help bring Windows Phone to a larger range of price points, market segments and geographies.

- Nokia and Microsoft would closely collaborate on joint marketing initiatives and a shared development roadmap to align on the future evolution of mobile products.

- Bing would power Nokia’s search services across Nokia devices and services, giving customers access to Bing’s next generation search capabilities. Microsoft adCenter would provide search advertising services on Nokia’s line of devices and services.

- Nokia Maps would be a core part of Microsoft’s mapping services. For example, Maps would be integrated with Microsoft’s Bing search engine and adCenter advertising platform to form a unique local search and advertising experience

- Nokia’s extensive operator billing agreements would make it easier for consumers to purchase Nokia Windows Phone services in countries where credit-card use is low.

- Microsoft development tools would be used to create applications to run on Nokia Windows Phones, allowing developers to easily leverage the ecosystem’s global reach.

- Nokia’s content and application store would be integrated with Microsoft Marketplace for a more compelling consumer experience.

The Symbian Signed signing services are being migrated and taken up by Nokia Corporation. Symbian Foundation will transition from a non-profit organization to a licensing entity, which means there will be changes in the terms and conditions of the Symbian Signed service.

In the context of this transition and providing the signing services by Nokia, new service terms and privacy policy shall apply to your use of the Symbian Signed services. To continue using these services, you need to accept the new terms by 28 February 2011.

You can do this by logging into your account at the Symbian Signed website, and Accepting the new service terms and privacy policy.

NOTE: If you do not accept the new terms by 28 February 2011, you will not be able to use the Symbian Signed service.

Additionally Nokia is continuing the development work of Symbian Signed started by Symbian Foundation. It is anticipated that these changes will be completed during the second quarter of 2011. More information will be shared once it becomes available.

Hendy Irawan has put up a great post on how you can sign Symbian/Qt Apps on the fly on Linux (Ubuntu) OS. With the latest version of Qt Creator 2.0+ (included in Nokia Qt SDK) you can now easily sign Qt/Symbian applications (.SIS files) with your Symbian Signed certificate and key files. The best part of it is that it can also be used with Linux operating systems (e.g. Ubuntu).

The Process is as follows:

To build a Qt/Symbian application on Linux and also sign the generated SIS file with your developer certificate and key, first you must install the Nokia Qt SDK Remote Compiler.

Open your Qt/Symbian project, go to Projects facet and add “Remote compiler” configuration.

Under Build Steps, expand “Compile at Server” details and you will see Sis Type and Symbian Signing settings.

There you only need to specify certificate file, certificate key file, and password/passphrase (if any).

As a bonus, you can not only sign the SIS file, but also automatically package it with Nokia Smart Installer!
Therefore, your Qt and Qt Mobility application now complies with Ovi Publish requirements and can be published to the Nokia Ovi Store!

Nokia along with other device manufacturers have looked at ways to address the battery life consumer experience issue with push notifications and are pleased to introduce a shared-push notification service which can be enabled on 3rd party apps using the Notification API. With the service enabled, applications on Nokia devices don’t need to constantly poll or maintain multiple connections across the network, saving both bandwidth and battery life. This helps developers to differentiate applications so they can more easily penetrate the worldwide market of existing Symbian and future MeeGo mobile users.

All the necessary documentation, libraries and emulator are available on the Forum Nokia Project site. You need to log in to access the project. This plug-in is compatible with the current Nokia Qt SDK 1.0

Check out the latest Web Seminar tutorial or White Paper to learn more about the Notifications API and visit the project site to get your own copy of the DevKit.

The new Notifications API Beta is now available as a plug-in to the Nokia Qt SDK.

People at Qt labs have worked hard to make Qt Quick development easier, productive and fun for you. For Qt Creator 2.1 they have the following new features:

A fancy Quick Editing Toolbar
The toolbar makes it easier to edit properties like colors, text or gradients.

A QML JS Debugger

QML snippets

QML code refactoring

The Visual Designer is enabled by default.

They’ve also made it easier to get started with Mobile Development by providing “New Project Wizards”. The Mobile Wizard and the new Qt Quick Application Wizard deploy correctly to both the N900 and Symbian devices and include some boring code for stuff you’ll likely need. There is lots more. Download Here.

Attendance is free and the event is open to all. To register, visit www.see2010.org.

Just as Symbian has broadened its mission to driving innovation throughout the mobile space, it is also redefining the landscape of its annual event to engage and inspire the brightest and most enthusiastic minds in the industry. SEE 2010 is not a tradeshow — it is a place for the wider community to come together, make cross-industry connections, conduct conversation, share ideas, educate each other and realize some of the vast possibilities that exist in the mobile market.

There is truly something for everyone, including open forums, keynote sessions, seminars, hands-on labs, interactive demos and, as always, the much anticipated Symbian party.

This year SEE 2010 will feature four seminar tracks, allowing the community to share its experience and knowledge and to engage with the topics that appeal to them. These include:
•	Application Developer Track
•	Horizon Track
•	Platform Developer Track
•	Business Track

Symbian is now looking for inspired individuals to submit abstracts that address the industry’s hot topics. The Call for Papers portal is available at www.see2010.org/call_for_speakers and the deadline for entry is 3rd September 2010.

Qt WRT is a W3C-standards-based web runtime. The runtime is now under the Qt’s new open
governance model . This is a signficication step for Web develpment because there is now a completely open mobile application development platform that requires only Web skills. We are talking about real applications on the mobile devices. From Webkit all the way to application runtime, every layer is open for contributions and innovations. You can try out some of the HTML5 CSS3 features that are available with the QtWebkit port.
