After the review on the physical aspect of the device, now I bring you all the multimedia review from the S60 Blog desk. I had initially had a few hick ups with the N96 but after the v12 firmware upgrade, I am very happy with the present state of things. So again, if you are a N96 user and have not updated your firmware, then please do by following this link. The new firmware totally Rocks and I highly recommend you upgrading to it asap

Following are the features that make N96 multimedia experience different from others:

2.8” QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) LCD TFT display with up to 16 million colors

Integrated kickstand and landscape-oriented speakers

16 GB memory

DVB-H capable

Other features like 5 MP Af Camera with dual LED Flash and N-Gage give it an edge over the likes of the 5800 Xpressmusic which on account of having a brilliant screen just misses the punch. Thus, I rate N96 as one of the best multimedia device till date with a few crashes and a sloppy battery back up, which is by far are the 2 limiting factor in most present Nseries convergence devices by Nokia.

With the N96, you have a big screen and huge memory at your disposal to store your favourite tracks and videos. If you feel its getting filled up, well then you do have an option for a microSD card too (improvement over N95 8GB). The integrated kickstand comes really hand not only when watching videos but also if you want to keep your device on your office desk with clock screensaver enabled.

Camera (Picture & Video)

With the hefty price tag, you expect the device to completely replace your digital camera, but that is not the case here. In N82 it may be but not here. Well, it has the same camera as the later but there is definitely a little variation in the software codes and thus what we have here is just okay. It may not be as good as the N82 but its one where you would have no problems even if you forget your digital camera. The photographs taken in bright light are great and when done at night are dull. Not to mention the hard camera key.

The video recording is also on the same beat and is not at par of what a flagship device should have. Plus the reduction of the on board video editor is also a thumbs down. Certainly not for a beginner as you need a little experience with these devices to get maximum results. Check our Phontography Blog, where is have resource for some amazing tips and tricks on mobile photography. So, this is a mixed bag but dual LED for video recording is pretty cool. Will come up with the complete review on its camera picture capabilities in a later post but for now I’ll give it 3 out of 5. (P.S. We don’t have the wide screen video capture option in N96 as in the 5800.)

Music & Video Playback

The 16Gb is enough to carry around your daily dose of music. The playback quality is excellent. The gallery takes a bit time sometimes to open the music player but it was descent enough for big volumes of data. on a whole it was the same experience as with other Nokia devices. The FM radio too was okay and pretty much the usual. The dedicated music keys are very handy. When playing the video, the kickstand is something amazing. The playback is usually super and the slide media keys are helpful. These features totally rock and i give them a big thumbs up.

N-Gage

This by far is totally a whole new dimension but keeping to to the N96, well it needs a little more improvement. I had faced a lot of crashes even when I had reformatted my device and installed the latest version of N-Gage client. Thus, even after trying my best to keep things up to date I faced this problem, this made me give it a 2.5 out of 5.

Final Verdict

Insipte of having a huge screen and large memory capacity and some snazy technology, N96 is not what it is intened for. Still we have to wait for another firmware update but v12 is also promising. If you have N96, update your firmware for a better experiece as now you will actually love using it and not just be pretending to. For new aspiring readers who want to get some serious technology of their hard earned money, well this should not be on you list. Finally N96 bags a 3 out of 5 on an overall multimedia experience.

Hello people once again, today while talking to a really good friend Zorawar Sidhu a thought came to both of ours mind. This blog post is in regards to that thought. Why are all the flagship devices of Nokia BULKY?
With bulky I don’t mean heavy I mean big. Today (and I may be wrong) consumers are looking for Features as well as Looks. Nokia in my opinion has always lost to other phone companies in two basic regards. The first being the launching price and second being the looks. I am today going to discuss only the looks.

It is not like Nokia has not made some really amazing looking phones. Nokia has shown that it can deliver in regards to looks as well. Well no points for guessing I am talking about the E71. It is the perfect combination of looks and power. The question that arises in my mind is why not the flagship devices. With flagship devices I mean N96, N95, E90 and obviously the soon to come N97 and if we go down the memory lane then we have the N91 also. Oh! before I forget the leaked video of E75 and E72 too are bulky devices for which Ani did a post on their obesity.

I know some people with me will disagree over the fact that Nokia distinguishes between the users who want a good looking phone and the users who want a power packed device and some less powerful but good looking phones like 8800, Nokia Prism and the Supernova series have been launched. But I will also stress on the fact that there are users like me who want a good looking phone as well as a power packed phone. Nonetheless I am confident that Nokia has the man power and the brain-power to find a middle path too. Nokia has done it with the E71 and also with the E66 and I hope to see some more really powerful device which are also amazingly beautiful.

People do leave in your comments so that we can see how many people want to tread the MIDDLE PATH like me or want TWO DISTINCT PATHS. Hoping to see some active participation

After my adventurous experiences of likes and dislikes with the Nokia N96, I finally sat down today to review this Nokia Flagship Beast. Instead to reviewing the device in a single post, I would be doing a multi post review with each post focused on the major elements of the device. Starting off today lets look at the build and design of the device in a detailed aspect. Some up close pictures of the device can be glanced up here. To be honest after my first experience with N96 I thought I would never use it again but last week when v12 firmware was available for download I decided to give it another shot & I’m glad that I did. The v 12 firmware release just saved the N96. Okay, so this is how I finally got myself going with the device again

1. Build Anatomy

The Nokia N96 is a solid looking device but at the same time is amazingly light in weighing only 125g. From a front view the device looks flat. Thus this flattish looks give it a nice clean appearance which is very pleasing. The Black / Dark Grey colour of the device looks good but the silver Rim seriously needs a second thought. This puts N96 into a back seat when it comes to the First-Look-Effect. The device is based on the Dual Slider concept on the path of Nokia N95 with dedicated Media and N-Gage keys. The keys are laid in regular fashion and are pretty much the same as the N95 except for the fact that they are more flat and broad. The dual slider of the N96 gives it an extra edge when it comes to music playback. On a whole I really like the looks and design of the device which I feel is real winner when compared to its other Nseries counterparts. It feels really solid in your hand and gives a sense of pride of having the ultimate multimedia device in your pocket.

2. Slider

The Dual Slider is a big advancement as it is spring assisted. This gives it a whole lot of benefit in the form of minimum to none wobble and strong slider mechanism. This is really impressive as you can clearly notice the difference between N96 and N95. The only problem is that it has a little splay when at rest which is not annoying but still not expected from a flagship device.

3. Keypad

The flat keys have been properly laid with the amount of space present and you hardly tap the wrong key. They take a little force but on a whole the flat faced keypad is brilliant. The Menu, C and media keys can be mis-punched a few times but you get used to them quickly. The Call Receive and the End Call Button could have been made a little bigger.

4. Gaming & Media Keys

The other part of the slide exposes these keys which are made really beautifully with an intelligent lighting source that lights up these keys when needed. Thus while you listen to songs or watch a movie you see the Media keys lighted up and when you play a game, you see the A and B key lighted up. This is pretty awesome

5. Camera Key

The Camera Key is a little disappointment as it needs to be pressed a whole lot down to be able to click a picture. So you need to practice to be able to press the button first half down to get the green focus box and then full way to click the picture.

6. Keygaurd Switch

Another innovative switch is the keyguard. It is a spring assisted switch with works great and helps you lock and unlock your keypad. I still remember it first came in N91 but that was on slide concept and it didn’t work well but this one is simple super. I like these small helpful things Nokia people come up with. Kudos!

7. Kick Stand

Finally the unique part of the design and built of the device is that it has a Kickstand with the help of which you can rest the N96 making an obtuse angle with the surface to enable you to watch your media with your hands free Wish they put one in N85 too. Anyways, this may seem a not so often used thing but believe me its used more than you can think of and is really helpful. I even use it to keep my N96 on my table with the clock screensaver. It looks great

Thus with the above points about the physical aspects of Nokia N96 I conclude that it has by large the best build quality compared to any 5 MP Camera Device at present. With others in league, only E71 beats it in this aspect. Therefore I am giving it a Thumbs Up and 4/5 stars for Physical Anatomy.

The NSU update is 110 Mb where as the OTA update is 2.5 Mb. (I have been facing a little trouble with the OTA update about which I will rant in my next post, Damn you Server Profile Settings!)

Following is the Change Log:

Phontography is the next generation revolution and every second somewhere in the world a picture is being clicked using a mobile phone camera. With a small list of Mobile Photography tips over at our Phontography Blog I am here starting a series of posts on how to achieve maximum results from your mobile device camera. I wanted to start this series by bringing in two colours which ironically are not considered as colours, these are Black and White. In this post I will try to highlight on how you can click some insanely awesome and at the same time retro pictures using your mobile device camera. I have used Nokia N95 8GB and N96 for the following pictures with a little tweaking from the in present customization options and have achieved exceptionally amazing results.

First of all you all need to explore the options that are present in camera mode. The ones that I used to achieve the results were
1.	Macro
2.	Black & White
3.	Exposure

With these three, I have been able to click pictures that were very unique and at the same time very appealing. A lot many times we feel that we need to have a higher mega pixel count in order to obtain better results. Well, while agree to this but only partially. I have experienced 1 MP, 2 MP, 3.2 MP and finally the 5 MP camera range of Nokia devices and by far I can say that it only helps in determining the size of the picture (i.e. the resolution) before it starts to break into its various pixels. The point that makes a difference is Focus. (click pictures for larger view.)

The latest devices are equipped with an Auto Focus feature which is simple but very important function of the camera. If you have been using a device with one then you know but one should not relay totally on it. You should manually focus the object you want to picture by pressing the camera button half-way down which will turn the centre box of the viewfinder green or red depending on the distance between you and the subject being focussed. So practice with this feature to get a hang of it and this will sure prove useful.
With these basic tips you should now explore the Macro Option. In many cases it will be labeled as Close-up Mode. (To activate this mode go to the Scene Modes options on the left navigation bar, when you switch to camera mode.) This gives you the ability to focus near by objects from a close distance up to 10 cm. Thus making the subject as foreground and rest as the hazy background. The object really comes prominent and alive with this technique. (Tip: Please note that select the Macro option before you make further changes.)

Next you can select Black & White from the Color Tone Option. This is simple and self explanatory. You can also try other color tone modes if you like.

After this tweak with the exposure, usually in the positive side up to 1.7, may be less or more depending upon the light and the subject you want to picture. Thus, now you are ready to click amazing Black & White pictures . Hope this helps you all. (Tip: Try to quickly bring the camera near the subject and see the motion effects come alive.)

This time round I had a little time to kill, so I decided to take my N96 for a little photo shoot. The pictures were shot using a N95 8GB. The device has been beautifully carved and has a great solid built which I really love. I will do write my thoughts about it in the coming days but the point I want to stress here is that N96 physically is by far one of the best works Nokia has produced. Okay, the E71 wins the top title but N96 is there right after. Having experienced the N95 8GB and N85 (dual sliders with regard to N96) are not as good as N96 when it comes to the build quality. Well, Yes, N96 has its share of flaws as well, but at the moment please enjoy the following pictures and do share your thoughts about them. Please let me know what all you guys want me to cover in the future posts and I will put it up for you. The video will follow shortly so keep a check on that.

Well everyone, there are 3 new things in the house and they have kept me really busy. You guessed it right. We have the Nokia N96, N85 and N79 with us and they are here all for you. So in this first post, I will put up a simple poll asking you to vote for the device vote you want to see unboxed and reviewed first . The poll will be up for a week and after the week (Next Friday) the devices will be unboxed in the order of the decreasing vote count.

If you have any question regarding the three about deals, price, offers, etc. just drop in a comment and we will give you feedback right away. So far I have been mentioning about the three in my previous posts but now finally I want you to vote and participate and tell me which one should I unbox first. I know this is a bit cheeky but I think this will be fun

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.
