In fact, I have learnt a lot of things about the history of Nokia. Check it out:

The ringtone “Nokia tune” is actually based on a 19th century guitar work named “Gran Vals” by Spanish musician Francisco Tárrega. source

The Nokia Tune (ringtone )was originally named “Grande Valse” on Nokia phones but was changed to “Nokia Tune” around 1998 when it became so well known that people referred to it as the “Nokia Tune.” source

The world’s first commercial GSM call was made in 1991 in Helsinki over a Nokia-supplied network, by Prime Minister of Finland Harri Holkeri, using a Nokia phone. source

In 2006 Nokia was the world’s largest digital camera manufacturer, as the sales of its camera-equipped mobile phones exceeded those of any conventional camera manufacturer. source

The “Special” tone available to users of Nokia phones when receiving SMS (text messages) is actually Morse code for “SMS”. source Similarly,

The “Ascending” Nokia SMS tone is Morse code for “Connecting People,” Nokia’s slogan. source

The “Standard” Nokia SMS tone is Morse code for “M” (Message). source

The Nokia mobile phone User’s Guides mostly use the Agfa Rotis Sans font. source

In Asia, the digit 4 never appears in any Nokia handset model number, because 4 is considered unlucky in many parts of Southeast/East Asia. source

Nokia was listed as the 20th most admirable company worldwide in Fortune’s list of 2006 (1st in network communications, 4th non-US company). source

Unlike other modern day handsets, Nokia phones do not automatically start the call timer when the call is connected, but start it when the call is initiated. (Except for Series 60 based handsets like the Nokia 6600). source

The name of the town of Nokia originated from the river which flowed through Finnish town. source

Nokia’s first iconic product, the Nokia 2100 series that was introduced in 1994, sold nearly 20 million units in its time. source

The world’s best-selling phone, the Nokia 3310 / 3330 sold 126 million units from its launch in 2000 until its “retirement” earlier in 2005. source

The combined total of all Nokia phones sold between 1991 and 1998 is 100 million. source

Nokia sold their one billionth mobile phone – a Nokia 1100 sold in Nigeria. Reported on 21-09-05. source

If all the Nokia 3310/3330 phones sold were laid end-to-end, the line would stretch from Helsinki, Finland to Santiago, Chile – over 13,500 kilometers. source

In 1991 Nokia sold 800 000 phones. In 2004, it manufactured 207.7 million phones, which equals 6.5 phones per second. source

Nokia consumes 100 billion components on annual level. On average, one phone includes up to 400 components. source

The first Nokia mobile phone ever made is the Mobira Senator released in 1982. source

Besides Mobile phones, Nokia also manufactures Digital Televisions, ADSL Modems, Wireless LAN interfaces, Telephone switches, GPS devices, Terrestrial trunked radios, and Security Solutions. source

“By the first quarter of next year 4 billion people will be using a mobile phone. One billion of these will be Nokia phones” – Olli-Pekka Kallavuo source

“Nokia has the largest consumer base for any consumable product in the World” – Olli-Pekka Kallavuo source

Google Maps for Nokia S60 Devices have updated to version 2.3.0.9 with a new feature of Street View. This is a very amazing update and it totally takes you to real time experience of the places you are searching directions for. I still remember my time in New York when I used to see the streets just to familiarize myself with some key points worth noting to help me with my directions and also not to end up in a wrong lane, but that was all done on my desktop thus, I had to spend about 20 minutes before I made a move. But with the street view now on your Nokia S60 Device, its easy to take course or even explore new routes right on the go . It’s a must for a Newbie

This is what the official Google Mobile Blog had to say:

Street View lets you access street level imagery to help orient yourself when looking for places, businesses, or getting directions. Say you’re going to meet with friends at an unfamiliar restaurant. Now you can search for it in Google Maps for mobile, click on “Street View”, and see what the place and surrounding area look like. Similarly, say you need to get to a shop in a part of town you don’t know. Find it using your phone, get directions to it, and see how to get there with full-screen panorama images of every step along the way.

Besides Street View, the new version of Google Maps for mobile also has a bunch of other new features: request walking directions (in addition to driving and public transit) to get anywhere on foot, receive transit alerts from participating public transportation authorities, and see what other people think of a place by reading reviews directly on your phone. We’ve also overhauled the entire user interface to make the app more responsive and easier to use. So if you have a Nokia S60 or Windows Mobile smartphone, go ahead and download the new version of Google Maps by visiting google.com/gmm on your phone. Enjoy the (street) view!

The only thing that needs to be adressed is that it is still not available in many countries including Inida, UK and others.

Good News for all North American Nokia Fanatics. It’s a great chance to get your trial Package for Free Voice guided Navigation along with Nokia Maps. I recently go a mail form Nokia which contained information about the Free trial they were offering to their North American consumers. This is something superbly awesome. I had a great experience with the Nokia Maps when I was in the US earlier this year and really like them for they really helped me move around. Only if this offer came then, it would have made my day, but nevertheless I feel its a great opportunity to try them out and see how they fare. The most important part I would love you guys to try is the Pedestrian Mode. Do give me feedback how it goes. At the moment only a few handsets are supported for the trial but I feel more will join in. Happy Navigating ya’ll . But I am still waiting to see Public Transit Facility. Hope Nokia puts that in asap.

I am still waiting for Nokia to expand their coverage in India. But things don’t seem to be working. Recently Google Maps added a whole lot of new Indian towns to its coverage and at the moment it’s the only one that has proved to be of some help for me .

I had somehow not been able to keep up with the events going around but a couple of my reader had asked me about Maps, GPS and Navigation in India. With Google Maps performing well on S60 v3, I was more than happy. Nokia Maps are a big thumbs down in India. Although they have been working great in the western countries but when it comes to India they have been no good. But lately Motorola launched its touchscreen GPS-enabled phone offering navigation maps and landmarks of 30 Indian cities this festive season. That’s Right finally some Real Navigation. The fun not only ends here. Its the first Non-Symbian flip device to offer this service

The phone has satellite based GPS which offers consumers lifetime free GPS navigation maps and landmarks of 30 cities and allows voice-guided navigation across major national and state highways. Well I’m not sure on the free part but the service looks promising. And it is said to work straight out of the box without even inserting a SIM card.

I had still been wondering when would India get to see some real Voice guided GPS and Maps and I guess Motorola has made a good start. Really would love to try this in action and give you feedback on how it did. I have been using Nokia Maps and GPS for sometime but they have totally failed in terms of navigation in India. Google maps have been the same. If Motorola can pull this one off then I guess this would be great. So for a company known for its edge defining designs, will this prove to be a winner or will this cast away like its predecessors A series phones? I for now have backstage information that Nokia too will be launching a service soon but how soon is not for sure right now. Will update you when things become more clear.

I know a lot of us do have the high end Nokia phones that come with an inbuilt GPS and the Nokia Maps Software but we have hardly explored it. The same was with me until lately when I accidently opened the application and gave it a shot. So after using it for about a month today I finally sat down to write about it in detail. Now it was an intentional accident and Im glad it happened as I was on vacation being unfamiliar with the neighbourhood made me feel a little insecure. Simply, you feel more in place when you know your way around and professionally it saves you a lot of time. So here is a Real Time Experience of Nokia Maps & GPS bundled together to see if the Navigation is worth or just another money minting technique by Nokia.

The events hereafter are based on my experiences with S60 based Nokia N95 8GB with the inbuilt GPS and Nokia Maps application.

So it was time to get myself familiar with the neighbourhood and plan for a few outdoor events too. I clicked on the icon of the Nokia Maps, which displayed the following screen showing the Maps to be loading. It took exactly 6 seconds to load 100%, which is not bad at all.

2. ACQUIRING LOCATION

As soon as the home screen loads, three yellow dots start to flash one at a time going from left to right indicating that the GPS is trying to access the satellite in order to display your current position. Once the GPS acquires your current position, it registers it by displaying all three dots as Green and you can locate yourself by just pressing the 0 (Zero) button which will take you to your current location which is displayed on the map in a + sign. Now it was a pretty dicey for me as sometimes the GPS worked really quick and sometimes it took a little while, but on whole it gave me a satisfactory experience in terms of showing you your current position, after all you can’t compare a Cell Phone to offer you the likes of a GARMIN or TomTom. But once it acquired your location, it then functioned pretty smooth.

3. THE OFFSIDE RULE

Before we go any further i would like to add (a little offside) that even if your phone does not have an inbuilt GPS, you can still carry around Nokia Maps application on your s60 or s40 enabled cell phone and download Maps for free an view them using the Nokia Maps Loader. So in this way you will have all the Maps you need with you that you can view offline, a pretty amazing feature (but you need a huge memory card or the 8GB memory to preload all the maps.) Only thing you would miss out on is Navigation. Now coming back to the main part, the reason why I started this post was to tell you about Naivigation and a real time experience with the GPS.

Some N95 8GB versions in some countries come with a free trial of Nokia Maps with Voice Guided Navigation for a limited period of time and as for me I didn’t get one, even though my box said that I had a free trial, so the first Negative score and that too a big one as I so wanted to have a go at it. If you too are in my shoes, then don’t worry as you can always pay some money to get a Liscence Or keep Reading this to know how you can get a demo of the Voice guidance. To know more about costs and pricing click here. You can also buy City Guides, which will tell you about various locations of a city viz. Food, Theater, Malls, Banks, Clubs, Hotels etc.

4. FEATURES & SHORTCUTS

Navigation with voice guidance is by far a hit and a miss feature but pretty good considering that it is an early effort by Nokia. Ability to have your personal Landmarks on Maps is also pretty cool and time efficient feature. You can also save Map as an image. Alternative Route Selection, Choice between fastest/shortest routes, Nearby search, etc are a few more to mention.

Following are a few shortcuts with screenshots i have found while using Nokia Maps and they have been really useful.

0 (Zero) = GPS Position

* = Zoom In

# = Zoom Out

1 = Switch Between 2D/3D Modes while in Navigation

2 = Change background Between Light/Dark while in Navigation

3 = Send Map via test, bluetooth, e-mail or multimedia message

6 = Recieving Satellite Status

7 = Increase/Decrease Volume of Voice Guided Navigation

Also you can search a keyword by pressing any numeric key (apart 0) in the default home screen.

5. THE NAVIGATION

From the Screenshots above it would be pretty cleat that how efficient the navigation system is, telling you exactly what route to take. To use the navigation all you have to do is to select Options>Use this place>Route from and then just punch in the place you want to go and select Search Route. The application according to your settings will give you the fastest/shortest route between the two places with a set of complete instructions. Once the route is displayed, you can select Options>Start Navigation. The navigation screen will appear which on top bar will display the nest street to turn on. On top left it will display the direction of the turn you need to take with the distance to go. The bottom part will display the current street you are on below which your will be your car speed total distance to go and time passed. The ‘N’ with the white arrow is the compass pointing towards the north direction and the three green dots is the GPS. The voice only tells you to make a turn and after what distance, but it does not speak the street names. You can also use the Simulation mode to have an experiience of the real time voice enabled demo of the navigation system. During my use the Navigation was Spot on most of the time. The GPS followed us through, only missing out in tunnels and sometimes in downtown and when the phone’s lights went off.

The battery consumption was nominal as it is expected to be but surprisingly gave more backup from the regular GARMIN nuvi 660 after one complete charge to total die out. The overall performance was a bit slow. The routes were accurate almost every time.

6. THE ADVANTAGES

Portable

Offline Maps Available

Good Batter Life

Accurate Coverage

Pedestrian Mode

Live Traffic Feeds (Limited)

Nearby Places

Can be used any car

Additional Features – Phone, Text Message, Camera, Video, Songs(MP3), Internet, Games etc.

7. THE DISADVANTAGES

A Little SLOW

Expensive

Complicated GUI (Graphic User Interface)

Small Screen

No Street Names in Voice Guided Navigation

Not Global

Only Few Handsets are Compatible

8. FINAL VERDICT

You can’t beat the fact that it is not only a GPS device but a phone as well, despite a few drawbacks, i would rate it a “BIG Thumbs Up” to Nokia for providing a complete package with a rating of 8.0/10 overall. So the money minting text i wrote in the opening paragraph has been drained down as the device comes with descent quality of service on which I’m satisfied. On a final note, i personally love this application and recommend it to all. To really know what it is like you guys should give it a try and I’m sure it will totally take you in the drivers seat for a long drive to explore new boundaries.
