Okay friends, here are the Top 10 Best free applications that you can use with your S60 based Symbian device. The list below consists of my personal favorites and if you feel that i missed your favorite then just pop a comment below. Okay so here goes!

10. Y-Browser

Y-Browser is a free filemanager application designed for S60 3rd edition Symbian smartphones. All testing is done with Nokia S60 devices only, but it should work as well with other manufacturers S60 smartphones. Currently Y-Browser only supports 3rd edition S60 mobile phones. No plans to support for earlier edition S60 or UIQ mobile phones are planned.

9. FlipSilent

This application allows you to just flip your phone and change the profile, it can also mute the incoming call or even hang up the call, it can put the alarm on snooze. It is a very useful and a must have application.

8. JoikuSpot Light

JoikuSpot turns your S60 Smartphone to a Wi-Fi HotSpot, enabling you to share your Smartphones 3G internet connection over WLAN to any device. With JoikuSpot you carry the Wi-Fi internet access in your pocket where-ever you are.

7. Fring

First were Fring scores is it allows VoIP services i.e. if you are sitting in wifi hotspot you can make calls using Fring. Fring not only makes a list of all the people online it also includes your entire Phonebook so that you can make VoIP calls .Fring has a tab system whereby you can toggle between the chatting and the list of people online and even see the log of your phone. So basically Fring in my mind is a better VoIP application.

To Download & Try Fring Click Here>>

6. Screenshot

Screenshot for Symbian OS is a FREE program to take screenshot on your Symbian OS mobile phones (UIQ or S60). You can capture screenshot and save it to a file in JPEG, PNG, BMP or MBM format. The screenshot can be sent directly to a PC via Bluetooth or infrared and another mobile phone. Furthermore, you can customize the shortcut key, file name and delay of capturing. It supports continuous mode that allows you to capture screenshot every a few seconds.

5. Opera Mini

Download and upload files directly in Opera Mini. Save pages for offline browsing. Auto completion when entering addresses directly. Find in page. Increased server speed during the last months. Signed versions of Opera Mini. Opera Mini 4.1 features speed improvements and is up to 50% faster than Opera Mini 4.

4. Qik

Qik (pronounced as quick) is an awesome software that enables you to share moments of your life with your friends, family and the world – directly from your cell phone! Thus making everyone living in the moment.

Follow the link to get Qik For Your Phone – http://qik.com

3. Calcium

Calcium is a fast, easy to use calculator for your S60 phone. Faster to use than the in-built calculator. Clean and intuitive interface. All operations performed with just the joystick. Best Part, its totally Free

2. Applications from Google

Mobile applications from Google are amazing. From my favourite GMail to Google Maps to Search to Youtube a whole lot of them can be found by clicking here>>

1. Applications From Nokia Beta Labs

These include the likes of Nokia Maps, Sports Tracker, Nokia Email, Nokia Chat, Calculator and my favourite Conversation. The best part abot beta labs is that if happen to find a bug in the application all you have to do is to tell our friend Tommi about it and he gets it fixed. So its a fluid input-output process with the goal of making the application work to its best. You can log on to the beta labs site to know more about them and download them by clicking here>>

This was a big news for us as we came to know about this and im sure everyone of you out there must have been as stunned as we were on day one. But slowly as the time ticks the real picture becomes more clear. We got onto our toes and have come up with the following interpretations from the news we got form the Symbian giant. What everyone knows as for sure is that the Industry leaders are planning to unify the Symbian mobile platform and set it free. Foundation is to be established to provide a royalty-free open platform and accelerate innovation.

What we know..!

In the coming years the mobile phone is going to be in approximately four billion people’s pockets. Not only will people use it as a mobile but as a gaming device, music player, internet etc. To make these features evolve the present most widely used mobile platform needs to be set free.

With this in mind, industry leaders are coming together to establish Symbian Foundation, to bring to life a shared vision and to create the most proven, open and complete mobile software platform – available for free. To achieve this, the foundation will unify Symbian, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) software to create an unparalleled open software platform for converged mobile devices, enabling the whole mobile ecosystem to accelerate innovation.

The work is expected to begin in early 2009 and membership is open to all at an yearly price of $1,500.

The Symbian Foundation platform will be available to members under a royalty-free license from this non-profit foundation. The Symbian Foundation will provide, manage and unify the platform for its members. Also, it will commit to moving the platform to open source during the next two years, with the intent to use the Eclipse Public License. This will make the platform code available to all for free, bringing additional innovation to the platform and engaging even a broader community in future developments.

The platform will be free and open to develop on from the start whether you are enthusiast, web designer, professional developer or service provider. To develop on the platform you will not need to be a member of the foundation. The Symbian Foundation’s developer program will provide a single point of access for developer support; providing a wide offering of tools and resources.

The Good…!

Mobile Phone Costs will Drop

A software will run on all cell phone devices on symbian OS

Free softwares for daily multi-tasking

Decline in Piracy

Integration with other mobile operating systems (viz. Google Android)

The Bad…!

Still in early stage

Present software market may undergo financial disturbance

Present Developers will be at loss (you have to be a member of the foundation)

No benefit to people at present

Eclipse Public Licence

The Ugly…!

The code can be leaked

New Viruses may develop

Developers may patent their software and add a huge price tag
