N-Gage is sure growing at a fast pace. Earlier at the Nokia Games Summit it was announced that 2009 will sure see a whole lot of games on the N-Gage Platform and guess what they already have started to pour in. Making in way it???s the ever loved and most anticipated game of the quarter, EA Sports FIFA 09. The game was officially announced for download by ikona over at the N-Gage Blog and at the moment it is available in the showroom tab of your N-Gage client. The best part is that the game is only 4 Mb which is easy for download on EDGE. Thumbs up to Nokia for making N-Gage OTA downloads which is great as it involves no hassle of a PC of what so ever.

I have been facing a few problems with my N96 so I decided to try this one on my N95 8GB. I will keep you all updated with the N96 and N-Gage venture but at the moment things look gloomy. Anyways, coming to my FIFA 09 Review, well, as you all know I am a BIG fan of Liverpool and have always followed them in every league. My FIFA experience with the TV ??? OUT can be sneaked up here. So being a total soccer geek I was very happy to see FIFA 09 go live for download. So I got my N95 8GB and downloaded the game right from the device without the need of a computer, which was really cool as the download was pretty quick using EDGE (AirTel Mobile Office). The installation itself was very quick. So wasting no time I decided to give the game a try.

The game starts with an all new Graphic User Interface which is very quick to load. The Main Menu is all setup like the one on Playstation and you can choose from various options. The important ones being the Options>Language + Game Setup + Control Setup. Thus they give you all the flexibility to have your game setup to suit your preferences. The best part is the help section as it guides you through different tutorials and game modes so that if you are a beginner, you can quickly adapt to the game. Finally the main game options of Game Mode, My team and Rankings have been elaborately made. The game mode has Scenario - Challenges - Season - Tournament and Penalty mode and the My Team has your Clubs, Nation, Statistics and Recent Progress. The Ranking gives you the idea off your current standings in the different modes of the game. You can pause the game for replays and select stadiums and even the weather at times is dicey, thus a complete package unleashes on your device. The graphics can be made a little more on the soft side but overall its good.

The Playing Screen in Landscape Mode shows the active player with a blue inverted triangle on top and the Goal Tally is on the top left. The active player name on the bottom left with the energy meter below. On the bottom right side is the overall map of the field with player position. The controls are very easy to grasp when playing on the landscape mode and the players can be operated using the four way navigation keys. The pass and shoot buttons too are easy and work very well. The overall gameplay is vey fast and thrilling. Sound is also very well adapted to the gameplay and gives you that extra punch. There are a lot of new tricks and techniques which you can work out and practice. Thus, with the complete database of players and updated club news, players, uniforms etc. the whole experience simply ascends the game to a whole new level. The game has definitely advanced and gives you an amazing experience. If you play it using the TV Out then it altogether is a whole new experience. Thus, I personally give the game a Thumbs Up along with 4 Stars. It definitely is the Game for all soccer fans + a must upgrade if you already are playing the 08 version. Don???t worry if you don???t know the Offside Rule as the game will sure teach you what it is about

This time round I had a little time to kill, so I decided to take my N96 for a little photo shoot. The pictures were shot using a N95 8GB. The device has been beautifully carved and has a great solid built which I really love. I will do write my thoughts about it in the coming days but the point I want to stress here is that N96 physically is by far one of the best works Nokia has produced. Okay, the E71 wins the top title but N96 is there right after. Having experienced the N95 8GB and N85 (dual sliders with regard to N96) are not as good as N96 when it comes to the build quality. Well, Yes, N96 has its share of flaws as well, but at the moment please enjoy the following pictures and do share your thoughts about them. Please let me know what all you guys want me to cover in the future posts and I will put it up for you. The video will follow shortly so keep a check on that.

India, one of the world???s fastest growing economy is also amongst the top consumer when it comes to wireless communication devices and services. With the second largest population in the world, the market has always been there, but to tap it well is the main key to success which Nokia has proved with their sustained efforts. So this is an open letter to all Companies to learn a lesson form Nokia on how it has taken a huge stride in leadership of the wireless communication devices sector. Well, some points here are for Nokia as well, as there are a few things that we like about the other device manufactures as well , so in all a general letter to all.

(Indian has world’s 17.50% population)

So I will do a quick but important rundown of the things we the people here in India are looking for. This post will have its share of Mathematics so keep those pens and papers with you. We have referred the Census Of Indian and Wikipedia for the following data. Now to start the first point that I would like to talk about which I already have is that India has the world???s 17.50 % population, which will roughly be 1.13 billion as of March 2008, which on a growth rate of 1.38% will overtake China real soon. So from here you can imagine the potential Indian Economy holds for you with a whole lot of consumers. So with that said, what does one need to strike big? Well, to know more read on.

Now, how will this help you? That???s really simple, with little cluster breaks we can divide the population into different groups which then would make more sense. Not the whole population is going to spend that money to buy your device, the only people that will do that include the portion of the population i.e. 15-59 years Age Group. So taking out that this population we get the figure of 56.90 % . Doing the Math part right, you should get 0.64297 billion people approximately, which include college students, workers, businessmen etc. That???s the population that should be targeted. So you now know what portion of population is actually using your devices.

(57% of the Indian population is productive)

Now, we are a developing nation, which means we still have a lot of things to achieve, like the west has, most important of them being social security. But let???s not get into that, what I am pointing out here is that, out of this huge population of productive age group we do have a lot of different sub groups that need to be individually targeted. The first and foremost is the people living below poverty line. As much as 22% of the total population lives below poverty line. So be it productive age group or no, this is altogether a different scene have to be subtracted from our calculations as they are in no position to spend for a device. Food and shelter are bigger priorities for them. This leaves us with 0.5016155 billion people.

(Point to note is that people below poverty line are decreasing every year)

The story does not end here. We have a Literacy rate of 79.9% which means that an approximate of 80% people actually know what they want in a mobile. (For this calculation we make an assumption that people below poverty line are not literate. Which is self explanatory and will have no effect on the overall outcome.) For eg. What features are the devices being packed with, is the cost of one device with a certain set of features better or the other device with some other features. Thus, they include the people who are ready to make decision between various devices based on their knowledge and are ready to look for options. So, now you know what your ultimate goal should be. That???s right, target this population. Well, it can be very difficult to do this unless you know some other facts worth knowing. The density and distribution of population are your key friends. With a product aimed at them specifically you can achieve wonders. If this clicks then, people would sure love to spread the word about it and thus a chain reaction would occur. But it is not as easy as it sounds. To know the grass root level story you have to have a proper team deployed which actually tests what people are looking for. They have a constant communication with the people and daily chart out what has been going on and thus are able to read the mind of the common man.

(This will provide an little overview where you should focus more and where will you face competition. Please Note, the areas with high population density need not be the most literate parts. So its a lot complicated and needs further evaluation to chart out an action plan.)

Also if you need a quick insight about how to go about it, then follow the middle working class. The people who are working in various sectors of life as they are the one???s who actually put the service on the scales and see if its really worth and thus give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down. But this leaves out the innovation part. So where to get that peek into the future, well just look around in various colleges and universities where a whole lot of next generation kids are bobbling with amazing ideas. And they do make an important part of the whole process as they are the future.

Another way to get that extra edge is to track the virtual world. The internet is full with people discussing every possible thing. Just find your niche and start exploring what people have been upto .

For the final note, let???s do some serious calculations. If you are able to sell your device to even 1% of the productive population then, it roughly comes out to be 0.005 billion devices sold. Well, you guys can do further conversions if you want, but I???ll leave it here But in a nut shell all you need to do is know your consumers and prove right on their expectations

Where is Nokia in all of this?
Well, Nokia has been involved in all this in various ways. First, WOM / World Nokia has been keeping a close watch on the virtual world discussing about their high end devices. This coupled with the sending of trials to us in India shows that the company has confidence in their products and at the same time are prepared to hear all the criticism, which actually helps. And not to mention the viral campaign they come up with time to time also helps a lot.

Second, they are advancing in every sector, right from simple phones and services for the poor to more spicy products for the teens to more matured devices for the business class. Thus, they are taking each sector along which is good. I first believed that, they were overlooking the poor class but with the recent announcement of affordable range of devices and Life Tools, they have proved me wrong. Well, these are a few points that everyone can learn from Nokia.

But at the same time Nokia has been a little complacent on certain matters. For example, I have not been getting a good response from their office when I have a few questions to clarify or some points of interest for which I wanted more information. So Nokia India totally lacks a Good Public Relation Department giving the Indian equation a totally thumbs down. The same is the case with the Nokia Care Centres around the city. So a gloomy picture here which is in no way working for the company. Hope they are reading this .

Anyways, but this is now, what will it be like in the future, somewhere around 2025. I have also charted out a few points that can be glanced below. Will make a new post on these points. We will also take a much more deeper look on different regions as well. Till then take care.

PS.

Do you know that there are 2 Mobile / Wireless Service Provider Companies in the top 10 companies list of India.

First looking at the lighter side of the things today. Nokia India Website Needs an Update. It still has on its Main Page Free N-Gage Title Giveaway Tab. Now, that has been over since 31st Oct. 2008, the details of which I mentioned here. Don’t know why the Web Team has not updated it as yet. But this is totally misleading and the worst part is it takes you to the N-Gage Homepage, although not bad but still no mention of any free title giveaway on that link. Wake Up Nokia India, Stop Fooling People. Anyways it was a bit funny , but if Nokia has extended the campaign, then its good. I have yet to get an official word on this, but I did a double check and guess what, the campaign is now closed. So a thumbs down for the official site for providing misleading information. Wonder why haven’t anyone called in their lawyer as yet LOL. We have a few screenshots below. I have written to the web team, lets see if we get a reply on this.

It is priced at an estimated Rs 25000/- which is way high of what was earlier announced. Following is a screen capture of the exact price in euros. Well these are the updates at the moment. More will come in so keep checking . Have a great weekend everyone.

Good News for all North American Nokia Fanatics. It’s a great chance to get your trial Package for Free Voice guided Navigation along with Nokia Maps. I recently go a mail form Nokia which contained information about the Free trial they were offering to their North American consumers. This is something superbly awesome. I had a great experience with the Nokia Maps when I was in the US earlier this year and really like them for they really helped me move around. Only if this offer came then, it would have made my day, but nevertheless I feel its a great opportunity to try them out and see how they fare. The most important part I would love you guys to try is the Pedestrian Mode. Do give me feedback how it goes. At the moment only a few handsets are supported for the trial but I feel more will join in. Happy Navigating ya’ll . But I am still waiting to see Public Transit Facility. Hope Nokia puts that in asap.

I am still waiting for Nokia to expand their coverage in India. But things don’t seem to be working. Recently Google Maps added a whole lot of new Indian towns to its coverage and at the moment it’s the only one that has proved to be of some help for me .

How to get My Free Trial*?

To activate your free navigation trial (N96, N95 8GB, and N95):

1. A quick info for you all Nokia Fanatics. Nokia has updated the Share Online Client for FP2 S60v3 devices. Below is the change log. With this application you can share your pictures and videos on Ovi directly from your phone. You can also keep track of the latest comments and pictures sent by your friends. Share Online also works with several other image sharing services.

Here are some of the new things that you will notice in Share Online 4.0 beta:

Improved upload/download experience. You don???t need to wait for your photos to be uploaded before uploading the next one. You can refresh your feeds, add comments, or even exit the application while the uploading is still in progress.

Outbox. You can see a list of pending uploads, as well as review, cancel or retry specific uploads. You can also use the Outbox to keep track of which photos and videos you have already uploaded.

Economic sharing. If you don???t have an affordable data plan, you can disable the use of cellular data in the Share Online settings, and queue your photos and videos to be uploaded as soon as a free WLAN connection is available. In addition, there are data counters available, in case you want to keep track of your cellular data usage.

Active standby indicators. Your outbox info is visible and accessible in your active standby screen. If you prefer, you can also remove these indicators.

The new features in Share Online 4.0 make use of technical enablers present only in the very latest versions of S60. Because of this, we are making this beta available initially only to a very limited number of devices: N96, 6220 Classic, 6210 Navigator and 5320 XpressMusic. We are aware that this limits considerably the reach of this beta, but we wanted to make Share Online 4.0 publicly available as soon as possible in order to start listening to your feedback. We will add support for a few more devices in the following weeks.

Download here.

2. Nokia Photos 1.5 has now graduated from the beta labs. Its a great software which works great with Ovi suite. Nokia Photos team was able to identify and fix several issues related to the new map view and general application stability.

You can now download the official release of Nokia Photos 1.5

as a standalone application from http://nokia.com/photos

as part of the Nokia Ovi Suite 1.1 from http://europe.nokia.com/A41159160

3. Nokia N-Gage now added two more devices to their support list. The N-Gage application is now compatible with these devices, these are the Nokia N78 and the Nokia 6210 Navigator. Hope this puts a smile on youe face if you own one. Download your copy today. Its good to see N-Gage listening to us. The net thing I want is that they figure out how to transfer your title when you upgrade your device

On my way back from hospital where I am doing my orthopaedic clinical rotations this weekend I took a break and sat down near a river where I wanted to spend sometime exclusively alone thinking of nothing. I did manage to take a few shots with my N95 8GB but as I was watching the water flow, with a calm breeze having that hint of scent of the brackish H2O cycling down my tracheobronchial tree I suddenly realised there are a whole lot of things in a today???s Smartphone which we hardly use. So keeping these in mind I decided to write about them here. I would begin with the one that I feel is the least used feature here in all of India. Any guesses???? Well, it???s none other than the Secondary Camera on your high end Symbian S60 devices.

To be honest the last time I checked it was when I got hold of my new device. May be I just wanned to make sure if it worked . Now after half a year I have not used it at all. Wonder what it is doing there. Yes I know that it can be used to make video calls, but here in India there is no cellular network service provider that offers such a feature. If you guys know how then please do correct me but here is India there is no way you can make a video call using your S60 device. So when I bought the device I was pretty excited to have this feature but soon I realized that this had no use for me. I don???t know if any of you use it or not but if you do then please make a mention here as I would love to know how you all are using it .

Why are we discussing this, well simply because when I heard that E63 had been officially announced I quickly ran down its specifications to find out that it didn???t have Secondary Camera. That was something I first didn???t understand but soon I figured out that it totally was acceptable as it was practically not being used anyway. Thus, a smart approach by Nokia to give people a set of basic features which are routinely used along with amazing build quality at the same time ensuring to keep the product more affordable. Kudos!

Following is a shot with the secondary camera of my N95 8GB. More on the Phontography Blog. Do check them out.

So have you been using these devices with a secondary camera? Have you managed to click some amazing pictures with it? I remember a model using it to check her hair-style but that???s all.

So fellas, join in the Phontoraphy Revolution. If you still haven???t used the secondary camera, don???t worry. Here is your chance to show your work. Simply send in your best shots to gomcoite.Phontography.mobile@share.ovi.com and after moderation it will be put up on our Phontography blog .

November is the N-Gage Month here on The S60 Blog and we will be reviewing a whole lot of N-Gage based games for you. Dirk Dagger and the Fallen Idol and Bounce Part 1 and Part 2 Reviews have been done and today we take a look at Asphalt 3 Street Rules. This is a game that is good for playing both on Candybar and Dual Slider devices. This is game took me off the hook as I really didn???t expect a Mobile to offer such advanced graphics. I have been a great fan of Car games especially the Need For Speed series and Twisted Metal right from my childhood days and have played every version of their game from PC to Playstation to Gamecube. So keeping this is mind I really didn???t expect this game to do any wonders for me but yet it clicked and has taken me completely out of surprise. I have still to punch in my codes as I have been planning an upgrade and as of yet the N-Gage does not support device switch.

The Game has its share of Cars, Girls and Crashes . The format is simple and has that electrifying feel with neon flashes and pumping music. The game can be played in both landscape and portrait mode and the keys are comfortable in both. The graphics are very well worked and come with great color depth and transition. The screen has special features at the side like the top left corner has your standing / rank. Below it is the mini map feature. This is a very useful layout and completely corresponds to your gameplay and is in no way lagging. The top right corner of the screen shows the number of laps done and remaining. The nitro meter is at the bottom left and the speedometer on the bottom right. You can switch between mph and kmph from the setting.

The Wanted bar displays the level when the NOS runs out and you have to catch those blue neon bottles to replenish it. Points that you make are displayed on the right part of the screen. Thus in all the screen elements have been beautifully used and none of them obstruct you in gameplay. A big Thumbs Up for this wise space utilization. It never made me feel that I am playing the game on the small screen. The sound and music with the SFX is also very kicking and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The game has instant play mode and the arcade mode. There is a wide selection of cars and places to test your driving skills.

Thus to sum up on a quick note, Asphalt 3 Street Rules have lived the magic of the car gaming on mobile devices and has amazing graphic detail to make a user plunge in deep. The choice of different game modes and cars along with various horizons makes it a complete package to look forward to. With this I am giving it a Thumbs Up and 3 stars out of 5. Well, not everything was perfect and thus the game lacked a few points. These I feel were the dull trial format as for a regular user who has been playing N-Gage for a while feels that lack of punch and gave one no reason to buy the full version and the graphic details are very similar to its predecessor, thus making it highly unlikely for present users to upgrade. (I mean you could at least change the girls )

For sometime I had decided not to write about the Leaked part of the Symbian Industry but they just keep on happening. But nevertheless I want my users to be up-to-date with the latest happenings in the world of S60, thus I am going to make a quick mention of a new device which was leaked. It’s the Wahoo, Nokia’s half QWERTY Flip Device which will be available with AT&T. Following is a quick picture courtesy BGR. The name has not net been finalized and thus it is code named as Wahoo

Technical Specifications:

* Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
* Dual-band UMTS/HSDPA (850MHz/1900MHz)
* There are two displays, one internal and one external. They sizes are 2.2??? with a 240??320 resolution, and 1.36??? with a 128??160 resolution respectively
* 2.0 megapixel camera with flash
* Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP
* Four hours of UMTS talk time
* Sadly a 2.5mm headset jack

The form-factor is actually pretty similar to the BlackBerry Pearl Flip, with a half-QWERTY clamshell design. The specs aren???t incredible, but hey, we think any Nokia fans on AT&T will take what they can get. Larger shot with more specs after the break!

Well, Nokia has added another QWERTY Messenger to its list with the official announcement to Launch the much hyped Device the Nokia E63. From the looks its more rectangularoid version of the E71 but don’t let these looks fool you as this is much improved and more powerful successor of the later. This device breaks the way music was traditionally served on Eseries as now it has a 3.5 mm Audio jack that can be used to plug in your standard headphones . Not ending the story here, we also have a free 1 GB Files on Ovi service with this.

UPDATE: Thanks to rakesh we have a few edits in our post. First the device is for emerging markets i.e. aimed for mid caps thus will be less expensive as compared the the E71. And second is that I just got an inside news that the E72 and E63 are different devices ;).

Is it the E72 or altogether a new phone is still a mystery but in case you want to take a look at the E72 vs E71 post click here.?? I was planning to upgrade to Nokia N85 but now I guess I’ll have to wait a little more and see if this new QWERTY is worth. Estimated cost is around Rs 18,000/- Rs 15000/-

Quick Specifications run down of the device: E63 handset features GPRS, EDGE and HSDPA connectivity, a 2 Megapixel camera (this is a thumbs down), no secondary camera for video-calls, Bluetooth, WLAN, Java MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.1, QWERTY keyboard, a generous TFT display supporting a 240×320 pixel resolution and a 3.5mm jack connector port.

The Official Press Release :-

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced the latest addition to its Eseries range, the Nokia E63, designed for people who need to manage their business and personal lives equally well. Building on the success of the Nokia E71, the company’s flagship messaging device, the Nokia E63 brings the QWERTY keyboard form factor to a broader audience at a great price. The Nokia E63 is expected to begin shipping in the coming weeks for an estimated retail price of EUR 199, before taxes and subsidies.

“Our research shows that people want a device that deals with both their personal and professional lives, but helps them to separate the two. When someone sits down at lunch, they want to update their social network or browse their personal email account and they don’t want work getting in the way of that. It’s another great case of technology adapting to the people that use it,” says Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Nokia. “The Nokia E63 is a new proposition for Eseries - a messaging device where people will be just as involved in their social network as they are in their business network.”

Whilst appealing to a new group of consumers with a design that feels great in the hand and has two new colors, the Nokia E63 is still very much a member of the Eseries family. Petersen continues, “People use Eseries to access their corporate mail, review their calendar and work in their business network, so the Nokia E63 still includes Wi-Fi connectivity, easy access to Mail for Exchange and dedicated key access to contacts, calendar and email.”

The Nokia E63 also has the ability to switch modes with a single key press, switching from a view of corporate mail, appointments and intranet data, to a personal mode with a picture of friends, personal email and shortcuts to favorite hobby blogs or websites. Petersen adds, “The amazing response we have seen to the Nokia E71, which has very quickly become the best selling model in its category, let us know that we are heading in the right direction. People want a rich experience when using messaging, social networks and the Internet. With the Nokia E63 you can enjoy the web, update your status and work meaningfully with multiple email accounts.”

The Nokia E63 also includes Files on Ovi, a service where people can get remote access to their PC files even when their computer is offline. Anyone buying the handset will have access to 1GB of online file storage for free.

The Nokia E63 will be available in ruby red or ultramarine blue with a range of multimedia features. Record and view images and videos with the digital camera and bright landscape display, listen to music downloaded from the Nokia Music Store, or a number of other sources, via the standard 3.5 mm audio jack or customize the device through the thousands of applications available for download.
