Nokia today announced the launch of three feature-packed, mass market smartphones, bringing the latest smartphone functionality at attractive price points and including market-leading innovation with Symbian Belle. The Nokia 700, Nokia 701 and Nokia 600 extend the range of available designs, features and functionality in the Nokia Symbian smartphone range. Symbian Belle powers all three, with single-tap NFC technology sharing and pairing, the most personal user interface so far and a more powerful mobile Web browsing experience. As well as allowing content to be shared between devices, NFC capabilities allow any of the three new smartphones to pair with NFC-enabled mobile accessories such as speakers or Bluetooth headphones and headsets. To extend the range of available NFC-enabled accessories, Nokia is also announcing the launch of the Nokia Essence Bluetooth Stereo Headset, which can be paired with any NFC-enabled smartphone simply by tapping the two devices together.

Symbian Belle range

While all three smartphones contain recognizable Nokia features, they each represent a very distinct set of priorities to allow users to choose what matters most in a smartphone. The most compact touch screen monoblock smartphone in the world (Nokia 700); a sleek and stylish smartphone with the world’s brightest mobile display for indoor or outdoor use (Nokia 701), and Nokia’s loudest entertainment smartphone (Nokia 600) all bring firsts to the Nokia product portfolio.

Nokia 700
At only 50 cubic centimetres, weighing 96gm and at 110 x 50.7 x 9.7 mm, the Nokia 700 not only becomes Nokia’s most compact smartphone in the Symbian range, it is the most compact touch monoblock smartphone in the world. What it lacks in size it makes up for in functionality, with single-tap NFC sharing and pairing capabilities, a 1Ghz processor, 3.2 inch AMOLED screen ClearBlack display, 2GB of internal memory (with the option of using a 32GB microSD card for a total of 34GB), HD video capture and 5MP full focus camera with LED flash. The Nokia 700 is also Nokia’s most eco-friendly smartphone. With a long battery life, extensive use of eco-friendly materials and features to minimize battery consumption, it is the perfect smartphone for any environmentally-conscious smartphone user.

Nokia 701: Nokia’s brightest smartphone

The Nokia 701 is a sleek, slim smartphone incorporating the world’s brightest ever mobile phone display, based on a 3.5 inch ClearBlack display that makes it perfect for indoor and outdoor use. It also has active noise cancellation for the clearest sound quality and, like the other new smartphones, provides single-tap NFC pairing and sharing capabilities, allowing content to be shared and sound to be streamed wirelessly to headphones and NFC-enabled speakers.

Based on the popular Nokia C7 design, the Nokia 701 smartphone also has a 1GHz processor, 8MP full focus camera with dual LED flash and 2 X digital zoom, 2nd front-facing camera and HD video capture. It comes with 8GB internal memory and the possibility to increase to 40GB by installing a 32GB microSD card.

Nokia 600: Nokia’s loudest smartphone

The Nokia 600 smartphone delivers a big sound and a big personality in a small package and is Nokia’s loudest at 106 Phons. With built-in FM radio antenna for listening to radio without headphones and FM transmitter that makes it possible to broadcast music from your phone to any FM radio, the Nokia 600 is a music-lover’s dream. With 60 hours of music playback time, an incredibly powerful internal loudspeaker and the ability to also stream music wirelessly to NFC-enabled accessories, it is the perfect smartphone to get the party started.

Available at a lower price point than the Nokia 700 and Nokia 701, the Nokia 600 still comes with a 1 GHz processor; 5MP full focus camera with LED flash and HD video capture, and 2GB of internal memory with ability to increase to 34GB using a 32GB microSD card.

Nokia 600

Symbian Belle

Symbian Belle is the latest in a series of planned software updates to the Symbian platform, which started with Symbian Anna and will continue into 2012. Symbian Belle increases the number of home screens from three to six providing more room to display applications and services. Live widgets, now come in five different sizes, making the home screens come alive and giving users more flexibility to personalize the user experience. It also includes a pull down menu and taskbar to access notifications from any of the home screens and further enhancements to the Web browsing experience. All in all, Symbian Belle provides Nokia’s most competitive, seamless and intuitive Symbian experience so far.

One of Symbian Belle’s most exciting features is the single-tap NFC sharing and pairing capability. This allows contacts, videos and images to be shared with other NFC-enabled devices and smartphones, as well as pairing with NFC-enabled mobile accessories such as speakers and headsets. Gaming fans also benefit from the NFC capabilities of the new handsets with the ability to unlock additional levels in Angry Birds or find a hidden blade in Fruit Ninja just by touching two NFC-enabled devices together. On the Nokia 701 smartphone, which comes preloaded with Asphalt 5, two friends can even pair to compete on the same racetrack.

This makes discovery a major obstacle for developers and app owners. App-Promo is one of the firms that truly understand this challenge, and they are working with a variety of clients to bring them success with their mobile products.

App-Promo recently launched a Qt-based application crafted to equip the development community with the tools, tips and information they need to market, distribute and promote their applications.

App-Promo chose to develop the App-Promo app using Qt because of Nokia’s expansive global development community. In addition, the support from Nokia on this project has been incredibly positive.

The content-based app features a variety of information from daily tips, to case studies to articles, all centered on the subject of app marketing.

The app’s “Tips” section provides what they call “snackable” content – quick, easy, single-focused ideas that can be digested in a matter of minutes and applied immediately.

The App-Promo app is available for download from Ovi Store at a promotional launch price of $6.99 (USD).

Microsoft previewed the next major release of Windows Phone. Code named ‘Mango’, this newest release brings a number of substantial improvements in both the software platform and developer tools.

Jo Harlow, executive vice president for Smart Devices, explains today in Nokia Conversations that Nokia is planning to release its first Windows Phone devices based on Mango.

“We are very excited about our strategic partnership with Microsoft, and Mango is a great milestone for the first Nokia with Windows Phone devices,” said Harlow. “We believe Mango offers developers opportunities to create new mobile experiences leveraging both companies’ complementary assets while providing consumers with a new choice in mobile.”

Featuring over 1,500 new APIs, 16 new languages and hardware-accelerated IE9 and HTML5 support, Mango brings enticing new opportunities to developers. Updates for tools, such as enhanced debugging, emulator support with accelerometer, gesture support and profiling will also improve developer productivity.

Rather than simply create one high-end device, Nokia plans to develop and release a portfolio of products that address as many of our audiences and markets as possible. Knowing that Windows Phone represents Nokia’s primary smartphone strategy, all of Nokia’s smartphone engineering resources are being prioritized to make the best hardware for the forthcoming Nokia with Windows Phone devices. Nokia will work closely with Microsoft to differentiate its devices with Mango by featuring its iconic hardware and services, while applying consistent design principles for a unique look and feel.

As Nokia embarks on the next phase of this partnership with Microsoft, we are beginning to put in place a number of activities that will help our developer community quickly prepare for the upcoming Nokia with Windows Phone devices. We recently published a technical article on the Community Wiki; and there will soon be a number of development guides that will help developers make the most of the apps they already have in Nokia’s application store. In the Projects site, members of the Nokia developer community are beginning to contribute some interesting examples that illustrate how to build apps for Windows Phone.

In the coming months, we will deliver regular updates from experts on both sides of this partnership to help Nokia developers make the transition to developing for Windows Phone. There will also be new improvements, new benefits and simplification to our Nokia developer support offerings, so please stay tuned.

To learn more, please watch this video where Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president in Windows Phone, shows off some of the new features coming in the Mango release of Windows Phone:

For more information, please take a look at today’s post by Matt Bencke in the Windows Phone Developer blog.

Nokia just launched the N9 phone at Nokia Connection 2011′s annual event held in conjunction with CommunicAsia 2011. The device clearly appeals to women with it’s candy colors, big screen, and almost 3D glass, 3.9 inch curved AMOLED screen.

All it takes is a swipe of your thumb or finger from the extreem edge of the phone to move away an application back to the main screen or switch between applications. Whenever you are in an application, you just swipe from the edge of the screen to go back home. The home key is replaced by a simple gesture: a swipe.

“With the Nokia N9, we wanted to design a better way to use a phone. To do this we innovated in the design of the hardware and software together. We reinvented the home key with a simple gesture: a swipe from the edge of the screen. The experience sets a new bar for how natural technology can feel,” said Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia’s head of Design. “And this is just the beginning. The details that make the Nokia N9 unique – the industrial design, the all-screen user experience, and the expressive Qt framework for developers – will evolve in future Nokia products.”

With a super scrollable keypad, the Nokia N9 comes in three colours: black, cyan and magenta and with large storage capacities of 16GB and 64GB on the two variants to be made available. Nokia also launched a hot host of accessories to compliment the device for your ears, eyes, and sharing sound over the air to your friends.

It’s always been a challenge to pair bluetooth handsets, but thanks to NFC (Near Field Communication), you just touch your headphones to the phone and it immediately connects the two of them together. Touch again, and it un-pairs your headset. Come home, and touch your handset to your Nokia Play 360° speakers and immediately, you are live in stereo sound, blasting away your tunes in your room.

The Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH-111 is a great little stereo headset that brings music and clear calls to people’s ears. Once charged, users can expect to be able to listen to music for up to six hours, seven hours for talk time and a standby time of 120 hours.

With the Nokia Play 360° sound you can easily create stereo sound by connecting another speaker – wirelessly – to get an even better music experience. You can connect to the Nokia Play 360° in a number of ways, using NFC for easy Bluetooth pairing or a standard 3.5 mm audio connector.

Along with the Nokia Wireless Music Receiver MD-310, which wirelessly pumps music from your phone, laptop or any other Bluetooth device through your home stereo, you’ve got the perfect summer system to browse the 360Fashion Social News application, and preview the fashion weeks using the latest technology. Using something called apt-x, you will still receive the exact same audio quality you’d experience from a wired system, giving perfect CD quality. With support for Bluetooth class 1, you can remain connected to the MD-310 within 100 meters.

Next summer you will be the life of the party with a distinctive style profile. Your friends will be amazed at your witty commentary on twitter/weibo around top fashion news. You’ll be the one telling your friends about the latest trend and others will admire you as a style leader in your own time.

The power of QT was demostrated in that we were able to develop this applciation in 5 weeks. The QT environment makes it also easy to port it to other devices in the future. Even though there were not API’s ready for the device we were able to work with the web API’s of weibo and twitter to bring out the social aspect of the application so as to enable fashion lovers to get into the conversation specifically happening around a brand. Using the QML our UI designers familiar with designing for web, could bring their ideas together with our programmers easily.

The Symbian Foundation today announced its annual event, the Symbian Exchange and Exposition 2010 (SEE 2010), which will be held at Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam on the 9th and 10th November.
Just as Symbian has broadened its mission to driving innovation throughout the mobile space, it is also redefining the landscape of its annual event to engage and inspire the brightest and most enthusiastic minds in the industry. SEE 2010 is not a tradeshow — it is a place for the wider community to come together, make cross-industry connections, conduct conversation, share ideas, educate each other and realize some of the vast possibilities that exist in the mobile market.

There is truly something for everyone, including open forums, keynote sessions, seminars, hands-on labs, interactive demos and, as always, the much anticipated Symbian party.

This year SEE 2010 will feature four seminar tracks, allowing the community to share its experience and knowledge and to engage with the topics that appeal to them. These include:
•	Application Developer Track
•	Horizon Track
•	Platform Developer Track
•	Business Track

Symbian is now looking for inspired individuals to submit abstracts that address the industry’s hot topics. The Call for Papers portal is available at www.see2010.org/call_for_speakers and the deadline for entry is 3rd September 2010.

Hi guys,

I had been waiting to get my hands on the Nokia X6. I like many others was waiting for a Nokia phone with a capacitive touch screen (for the people who are not geeks its just what the iphone has).

THE FIRST TOUCH:

The initial impression which the phone had on me was that the built quality is really sucky!!!! (pardon my language). The creeks on the phone are horrendous. The size of the phone for me is perfect. It feels really snugly in the hand but the built quality kills the initial feel. The back of the phone is the worst, it feels like a down right cheap phone and does not do justice to a high-end Nokia phone. Consider this as a RANT, I have a really big problem with the built quality Nokia is coming up with the N-series ( Except the N97 mini). I don’t have a problem with the plastic body its just that if they can make the metal bodies of the E-series impeccable they can surely do a better job with the plastic of the N-series.

THE CAPACITIVE TOUCH SCREEN:

The capacitive touch screen does take some time to get used to especially for people using the resistive touch screen Nokia provides for in its other touch phones (5800, N97, N97 mini, N900 etc) but as you get used to it its a delight. The 3.5 inch screen with an aspect ratio of 16:9 is awesome, the 640 x 360 resolution also makes the experience delightful. Input methods in the X6 are the same as other touch phones Nokia is providing albeit the T9, and half and full QWERTY keyboard. Kinetic scrolling now a in the box feature is a added pleasure.

THE PHONE IN GENERAL:

The Phone is a all touch phone with no physical keyboard. The front of the phone has the video call camera, the motion sensor, the ear piece and the dedicated shortcut key. There are only 3 physical keys on the phone the including the call keys and the menu keys. The placement of the other basic keys are basic the top of the phone has the USB slot, the 3.5mm jack, mic and the power key. The left hand side of the phone holds the sim slot and the speakers while the right hand side has the volume keys, the camera keys and the lock keys.

CAMERA:

Nokia X6 comes with 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar optics. The camera of the phone is a delight (coming up next post camera samples). The camera comes with dual LED flash ( RANT WE WANT XENON FLASH…. HIGH TIME !!!!!) The X6 comes with image editor and all (still have to give it a try so will let u guys know).

THE VERDICT:

I personally had high hopes with the X series and I am disappointed much of the disappointment is due to the PATHETIC built quality. I don’t intend to write the phone off, the capacitive touch is a WINNER i like the shape as well. Nokia has no doubt lived upto the expectations riding on the fact that this phone was touted as a successor of the much acclaimed 5800 ( I know some people feel otherwise!!!! but then its my post and my opinion!!!! ) So overall I give the phone a 6.5 out of 10 ( Don’t blame me i am using the N900 ) Its a great phone if you can overlook the built quality.
