Nokia N97 v21 QWERTY Confusion

February 11th, 2010 | 10 Comments | by Ani | Share

I was using my N97 to write an email when I found that the long press on the keypad was giving me an input error. At first I thought it was my mistake but later when the errors were repeating, I found out that, indeed it was the new firmware problem. Recently I upgrade my firmware to v21 which promises a lot of improvements. The phone felt snappier and quicker. It was today that things made sense when I got hold of a N97 mini as well. It seems that due to the variation in QWERTY layouts in all the devices Nokia is producing, they mixed up the mini flavor on to the N97. Take a look at the video below to see what I am pointing at.

I wanted to point this out before but I feel this is the right time. While using QWERTY devices with special characters on long press, you tend to develop a reflex to their location on the keypad. This is the case with me but when I switch/upgrade a device, I have to figure out the new layout, which is not hard but takes time getting used to. But this blooper by Nokia is really fun. With so many QWERTY layouts out there, Nokia themselves got mixed up with the layout and ended up providing the mini keyboard specific firmware update. The future calls of a custom keypad layout system which can be modified. The display on the keys can be made digital to morph according to ones preference. I guess Motorola is working on it but am not sure. Would love to see more the likes in the future. As for now, Nokia should roll out a OTA to fix the present issue.

So did you try the new firmware upgrade on the N97. Share your thoughts with us by leaving a comment below.

my n97 has the same symbol as the mini 97 printed on the keypad for those keys, not the one yours dose. Ie my c key is a % symbol and the v key is a & symbol. my m key is a ) symbol. Mine is a early 0-day release australia model with the crap lens protector.

  2. Tarek Says:

Yeah I tried it but didn’t get the same error… I think it’s just one type of keyboards (language set 24 as yours??)… Mine has Arabic letters as well as English ones, but it’s working fine (language set 15)!!

  3. Alex H. Says:

This is not a problem on the N97 NAM (RM-507). It’s probably regional firmware specific.

  4. Willie C Says:

Exact same *#0000# as your except for the language set being 01 on mine so thought it was simply that when looking at video… Did not notice that your keypad is different to mine until I saw the comment.
My c key has a % on it v has the & etc etc etc

now that you guys have mentioned, i did realize that there are different layouts, but shouldn’t firmware be specific to language set. I hope nokia fixes this soon.

No problems or errors at all with my N97 FW21.  Long press on qwerty works fine.

  7. Suhasini Says:

I had the same problem with my phone so I changed it to E 63 but even that is not giving me a great performance.

hi maybe this is not the place for this question, but i could not find an answer for it. is there a right/ left arrows on n97 or a way to use them. I get frustrated when typing a message and want to go some characters back without deleting them (touch screen is not that precise) + some online games require them.
    thanks, hassan

Have you had any luck fixing  this? My daughter just bought an N97 and it came like this.
I am not sure returning it will fix the problem though…
