Nokia 5800 Firmware Updates To v40.0.005 Adds Kinetic Scrolling And Revived Homescreen
Nokia has rolled out the v40 firmware for theNokia 5800 via the Nokia Software Updater. Changes include implementation of partial kinetic scrolling to the device and a revived homescreen to match the Nokia 5530 XpessMusic. Other changes include auto-switching to the on screen QWERTY keyboard when you turn the device and a few optimizations to the tap/double-tap selection process and the addition of Ovi Contacts. The update is now available over the air as yet and may not even show up on the NSU across all regions, as always patience is the key. This update is a definite must do, although if you care about ‘hacking’, it appears that has been blocked with this release.

Update includes:
- Partial Kinetic Scrolling
- Changed UI in the homescreen similar to the 5530XM
- Updated Nokia Messaging
- OVI Contacts pre-installed
- New screen alarm when locked
The Nokia 5800 features user-data-preservation (UDP) so you will not loose any data when you update, but backing up the device is still a good idea. Tell us what you think of this new update. Discuss about this over at our forums by Clicking Here.

Oh absolutely! I keep checking OTA obsessively – sometimes more than once a day… no success yet. Oh and btw, is there a place where one can check to easily get this list of product codes? Other than whatever magic it is you guys do?
January 14th, 2010 at 3:15 pm
Hehehe…I understand. And, there is no specific website(there maybe, but )…I just stumbled upon these codes on some webpage where there was a mention of them. I wonder what’s limiting them from releasing a firmware update that will work for all models!!! I mean, I still haven’t been able to get that v31 update and the world has already moved onto v40. I have heard that the Nokia Care centres update UR phone for free if within the warranty period otherwise charge 250 bucks for doing it.In the end, the KS is definitely needed thing on this phone.
Will keep U posted if I do find that elusive update……..otherwise its goin to be another long wait, I guess.

January 16th, 2010 at 5:21 pm
my code is 0573744: Baltia Black and it is in the list, but i can’t update it…
January 17th, 2010 at 4:23 am
What is this new screen alarm feature? Can’t understand it…anyone care to explain?
January 17th, 2010 at 5:14 am
An interesting observation here folks. Just like Khalid sez, the V40 update shud be avail to one and all @ Nokia Care Centres regardless of the product codes. For example, a friend of mine has an India Red 5800 with product code as 0575590. Although this site, http://europe.nokia.com/support/download-software/device-software-update/can-i-update shows the result as :-
Latest available software for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, product code 0575590
Version: 30.0.011
He actually got V31 firmware update on his phone when that was out. So, Im assuming that it will be the same case with V40 as well. Those guys can load it up if they wish to. I guess Care of “Nokia Care Centre” it is if U are unable to find UR Update over NSU/OTA.
January 17th, 2010 at 5:42 am
wat is the website for nokia care centre plz
January 17th, 2010 at 6:13 am
Hey Moe,
Nokia Care Centre is not an online venture. Its more of a Store where U gotta go personally and give UR phone away for S/W Updates or Repairs. Google the name of UR place along with Nokia Care Centre and Im sure U will be able to find one that’s closest to the place where U are put up. Alternatively, look up the Telephone Directory or call a local Search Engine who can give U more info.

for Nabeel>
at the alarm screen… there are 2 things…
to postpone it, u have to move your finger from the right to the left at the lowest line in the screen.
to stop it, move your finger from the left to the right over the upper line.
of course, you have to be awake to do that, i guess:P
ontopic> finaly… an update that really is an update
January 17th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
@ kiarn, dolphin -> any other option for update if there is no updates available at nokia care my code is 0575590 can u send this via mail plz……. & if there is any other option then let me know …….
January 18th, 2010 at 6:02 am
Guys,
I bricked the phone and had to do a Hard Reset. Lost all my contacts and messages and apps too. Feeling devastated. If U are planning to do something on these lines, I suggest U take a full backup before doing anything.
I changed product codes and updated the Firmware thru NSU. Seemed to go thru fine until the worst happened.
Cheers,
Kiran.
January 18th, 2010 at 5:02 pm
@Kiran: Ouch! So I guess that is one thing I will not be trying to do.
January 18th, 2010 at 6:04 pm
People’s who bought first (Product code: 0575590) there’s no update. Was there any processor change happened in new 5800 XM mobile? Bcoz they are only people’s getting all the updates.
We are the first to try Nokia experimentation at higher cost and least bothered. This is not only for the mentioned Product Code but also for the other’s. There have been worst case of people remaining at v21.
Wake up NOKIA, we at least needed reasons to satiable our eagerness on every release of firmware.
January 19th, 2010 at 12:47 am
this version is not good my mobile after update it was very slow
i restart telephon to mush
what i do ?
i want back to old version
January 19th, 2010 at 5:34 pm
It is not possible to revert 2 previous version.
Contacted Nokia Customer Care; it seems V40 is not officially launched in India. Hope it will be launched for all product codes
January 19th, 2010 at 7:08 pm
Can any one tell how to update my 5800……
code:0575590
January 20th, 2010 at 3:40 am
Folks,
From my side, I was desperate to get this Firmware upgrade for the KS of course, nippier touchscreen interaction and for more free RAM.If U change the product codes and do the upgrade, it will work;however the phone will not come back on when it goes for a restart.
Performing a Hard Reset [Call key+ End key+ Camera] brings it back on but wo any settings or Apps that were installed to the phone memory. The main things I lost were Contacts, Msgs,Calendar entries and Apps.If you can take a backup of all these, then U can safely go for the upgrade.
Did U notice that no other recent post in this website has received so many comments.Speaks volumes about the popularity of the phone I guess.
This is a website I found that explains just the right steps to go about changing product Codes:-
http://my.s60blog.com/viewtopic.php?f=72&t=1336
Also note that, if UR phone was bundled with a SIM card/offer by some Service provider like Airtel or Vodafone, U can be rest assured that the FW upgrade will not be out until these guys give Nokia the green signal to release them into the market. If UR phone was a vanilla product[i.e wo Any offer] then U shud ideally have the upgrade available.Thats Y U find that when U launch the NSU, there is a Disclaimer that “Please note that your mobile service provider, operator, or carrier may not have approved the latest Nokia device software available.”
So, its not Nokia’s fault really!!!

My 5800′s PC was (notice the ‘was’) also 0575586 and the v40 update was not available via FOTA or NSU. I used the NSS tool to change the PC to 0559961 for and then used the NSU to update the firmware the normal way.
The process went thru smoothly and there have been no issues after the upgrade. Although I did take full backup etc, the upgrade preserved all my previous apps/contacts/msgs etc. The new v40 features seem to be working fine and I have not noticed any hangs etc. Subsequently, I have also installed the latest OVI maps with the free navigation feature and thats working amazingly well too…
IMP NOTE AND DISCLAIMER: The above is only FYI and is not a guarantee that it will work the same way on your device as well. Try at your own risk…
