Nokia World 2009 – After Effects And Thoughts

September 4th, 2009 | 2 Comments | by Ani | Share

Finally with the lights out, its time to look back and see what all has been said and buzzing around. Nokia World 2009 has slipped into the back door with loads to ponder upon. This year was truly different from what we have had in the past. Why different well, if you were at Day 2 of the event, you would know why. I’ll share my thoughts on various devices Nokia announced to its latest services and outlook, but lets first summarize what went on in Stuttgart for the last two days.

day1

Day 1 was all about consumers. Started on a flying note by Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO, it was the event to be in. From new devices to firmware updates of the present, it had all that mattered to you. There were some new players in the scene as always and this time round it was the birth of the much rumored  Xseries. But before we take you to it, lets see what was Nokia eying upon.

Change is essential and is the mantra at the moment. The recent times have seen a lot of change and restructuring of the Finnish giant. Yes, the big recession has hit upon the mobile scene and Nokia couldn’t escape. Thus some hard decisions were made but in terms of the future, they seem into place. Thus with change in the air we saw some stunning announcements. An expansive portfolio is on way to reach the masses but with the quality services that will work on one backbone called Ovi giving people the true mobility.

The wave of devices announced on day numero uno were quite impressive. Since it was all touch based, it was good to see kinetic scrolling all through. X is the new music bling. X6 and X3 en route to comes with music is a complete package. Music and mobiles go hand in hand and comes with music gives you a legal access to all what you can digest and more. Catch the complete specifications and pictures of the xseries debutant’s here. What I really like from these devices is the robust design which looks rock solid and classy and the all touch gui.

Switching the talk to something old but now served in a refreshing new package is the Maemo with a high 5. The new OS is packed in N900 which also is a killer and is in the league with N97 but only better. A lot of word about this device can be found here. What I really like is the huge all touch kinetic ready screen which is spectacular and the OS sure looks promising. Now I only need developers to fill it with apps.

Pushing things further we also saw one of the biggest Nokia devices yet, the Nokia Booklet 3G which runs on Windows OS and is a branch to the computing world of netbooks from Nokia. Specs and pictures can be found here. Simplicity of design and function is what makes this product a must have.

Well, on the final note on day 1 we had some known remakes, the N97 Mini and the 5800 Xpressmusic Navigation edition. More information on the two can be found here. Now you all would be wondering that this all sounds cool but where is the cost benefit ratio. You all would be thinking that I haven’t said anything about cost. Well, the truth of the matter is that in some countries these devices may come along with carrier deals while in some they would be sold unlocked, thus the final cost is still not out yet but the prices are listed in their respective posts. But to be honest, these devices are surely the most productive and worthy to spend a buck.

Oh, and did i mention that Nokia is also launching a new set of bluetooth headsets with NFC viz. Bh-607 and Bh-505 along with the much awaited v 2.0 for Nokia N97 firmware update which will be out this October with full kinetic scrolling and more free RAM :D . Plus the Social Internet and Lifecasting applications on ovi are organising our online mess into one place, not new but still cool to have it on a cellular device. So fellas take time and check out what all in on way for you. These devices will sure take your physical and online world into a blur and help you socialize on the go.

day2

Day 2 was more what I really enjoyed. I know it was not as flashy as day 1 but was more relevant to all of us developers which in turn affects all you consumers. Its all a circle thing. Well, we saw Ovi Team officially announced the availability of Ovi SDK to be put to use in various mobile applications that will run on cross platform i.e. Symbian & Maemo. All these can be viewed over at Forum Nokia.

Also the Maps and Navigation API were released that will make businesses enable their mobile applications to help you find their right place on the go. Meaning no need to print out directions and maps from the computer anymore. There are a lot of possibilities to this and its all where your creativity lies.

This means that now in its only time that is a standlone measure which now stands in between you and application developers. Soon we expect app developers to use the SDK’s and API’s and bring out more and more useful application for all consumers.

Apart of the SDK’s and API’s we also saw what I really want to try out in person, the Nokia Money. A secured way to use your Nokia mobile device with different banking services without the need of ever carrying cash. Still its a little premature at the moment but it sure is where the future lies.

Also were enumerations on the Lifetools and emerging markets data gathering techniques which have been in use for a year now but their potential has not been put to the full test. Thus the day was a big gain for developers and a wrap of the Nokia World Event for 2009 :D

There is still a lot of things that Nokia did not mention, like its plans with Symbian in the future, Microsoft connection and will Maemo have the same fate as Symbian? I guess these would eventually be presented to the cell and services maker but for now lets enjoy the new devices and services
