Nokia 5800 Firmware Updates To v30.0.011 (Changelog Inside)
Steve over at ASS just reported that the Nokia 5800 has just gotten its v30 firmware update. Good thing is that its available Over The Air (type *#0000# from the home screen) for some product codes as a 4MB download. Steve also reports that it is not the ‘mega’ update that many of us had thought was coming, tying in with the upcoming 5530 XpressMusic, but he still recommends this update, which brings bug fixes and performance optimizations.
Do a backup of your data before the update, just in case, but the User Data Preservation system should mean that all your data, apps and settings will work properly after the update.
Changes/Improvements/New features/Bugs noticed from v21.002 to v30.0.011
Standby screen:
- *When Music Player is operating, and seeing the track name on the screen, and then when one song ends and goes to the next track, the speed at which this happens has improved yet again from 21.002, although the noticeable change is not as much as from 20.149 to 21.002.
Call log, Contacts and calling function:
- *Calling speed (from standby screen to Contacts or Call Log) and transition to call/disconnected screens even faster than 21.002, is more than the instantaneous that I stated for the 21.002, it has improved yet again.
- *New menu option in the in-call menu to Send MMS during phone call.
- *Loudspeaker maximum volume has seemed to decreased
Maps:
- *Maps startup is now almost instantaneous, speed through all the Maps menus very fast, even faster than Maps 2.0
- *Switching to different views is very smooth and fast now, i.e. to Map 3D etc.
- *Maps version 2.0 week 39 remains the same, although the Maps is able to be upgraded to Ovi Maps 3.01 flawlessly
Music Player:
- *The biggest change is the equaliser improvements. There is a huge improvement in sound quality, even background sounds and other channels are more noticeable. The default equaliser settings are quite good. And bass is less crunchy than before.
- *Split-second delays now do not exist when pressing the volume keys to change between volume levels. In the past, there was some degree of delay, even running multiple applications now, that behaviour has been improved remarkably.
- *Freezes in the music player have not been evident to me yet in my days of usage with the new firmware . Which is a marked improvement in the functioning and stability of the music player. Screen tearing and slow speed for album art to appear is still present though.
Camera and Photos:
- *Biggest change is the reappearance of use of the volume keys to zoom while taking photos/recording video
- *Going into Details is faster than 21.002, almost instantaneous now
- *Scrolling speed through thumbnails is only minimally jerky now, also scrolling through photos at 100% view has improved in speed so it is now very smooth and almost instantaneous
- *When going into menus in Camera, the speed is instantaneous
Video centre:
- *Logo has changed for the video centre in the menu
- *Appearance of video menu is different and seems to have inherited the newer N-series/E-series style simplified logos
- *Speed in the video centre is much improved and is almost instantaneous
- *Changing between volume levels in RealPlayer is instantaneous, fast-forward/rewind speed and resume of playback after these functions is improved and almost instantaneous. Sound quality appears to have been improved also.
Search:
- *Application has been upgraded from v4.08 to v4.10.0904
- *Logo has changed and is now reminiscent of the newer N-series/E-series simplified styling
- *Performance is faster and Yandex search service has been removed in favour of Live Search and Google (Note: this is for the APAC variant, will vary between different regions and specific countries)
Web:
- *Rendering of webpages has improved in speed since 21.002
- *Rotate Screen option speed is now almost instantaneous
- *Speed in Web options menu is now instantaneous
- *Loading of Minimap on side when scrolling down pages does not have pixelation anymore
Other:
- *Overall system speed has been improved so it is somewhat faster than 21.002
- *Scrolling in the Multimedia menu from one tab to another whilst multiple applications are running, has improved marginally in speed
- *Overall stability seems to also have been improved, have not had one crash or freeze where I have had to remove the phone battery. The slight freezes that have occurred, the phone has recovered from flawlessly.
Do please comment if you spot anything that’s actually added.

Hi there,
Fantastic news, this new firmware update I have found to be the best increase of performance for nearly all functions. There wasn't too much noticable inprovement when I updated to v21.0.025, V30.0.011 is so much better. I doesn't lag nearly at all when opening a select function. Even the camera picture quality seems to be improved too.
Outstanding firmware update, Now the 5800 XM really works like well, and is now a REAL contender to knock out the iPhone toys.

Changelog is missing one from the “Standby screen:” section. Quicklaunch bar now also shows email, but needs *#7370# reset to be activated.

was waiting eagerly for it,,updated firmware 2 days back..havn't noticed anything special…(booting up mite hav been better,bt usually won't switch off my phone,,so nthin much noticed),,but have encountered some(2-3) hangs with my 5800,for the first time,in the past 6 months…..
i wished this Firmware update to be with the 5530 homescreen n new features,so a bit disappointed…..

Hi Anisaly,there is nothing fixed with it,,it depends on the tome you got your phone,,like the earliest mobile launchedin india had v11,later the new handsets had the later one.to check your current firmware version press *#0000# on the device…….

Earlier it was only available throuth FOTA(over the air),but it is now also available through nokia software updater,, i reinstalled on my phone through NSU,3 days back…..

Open to Menu screen, Select “Settings”, then select “Phone”, scroll down to select “Phone Mgmt”, then select “Device Updates”. This screen will show your current version of software. Now you need to select “Options” (Bottom Left of Screen), Then in the pop up menu select “Check for updates”, select “Yes” to connect to the internet. Next it should request to select connetion type, I selected my providers internet option, but you also use the WLAN option too if you have a wireless connection available.
Once this selection is made it will start to search for an update and will download and install the most current version.
Phone will switch off and back on again when complete.

2 things you need to answer for me;
1. What version do you currently have?
2. When you connect to a WLAN what is your phone doing? My phone automatcally checked for any updates available. when it was done checking, I remember it asked if I wanted to download and install ver.30, I confirm with “yes” and it started to download.

Either way, you need to connect to an internet connection with the phone to download.
Not sure what is not working at your end.
I have shown a couple of friends this update for their 5800 XM's, and it worked straight away, and was downloaded & updated within 3-4 mins.

its not bogus, its the changelog that i have for the 30.011 firmware for the N78. problem is that someone stuffed it up and wrote it as for being for the 5800 and it spread everywhere over the internet.

I just did the update through PC Suite (USB cable) as it was offered automatically by the software. I accepted, did everything fine. Now my phone looks useless…I tried everything but remains blocked and not allowing me to unblock it using thekeyward switch on the side of the device. I'm very upset and frustrated. Not sure what to do now…Any advice?

Yes on the first day new version released I updated my system really its fine clarified the doubts with Nokia customer care also. I can see the changes and spead also.

The new software update has so many problems 2 it!!! Like after using it for some time, the messages wont get sent, the music library will automatically delete songs!!! What the crap is going on!!! Why did they even release it when it had so many errors 2 it!!! Im disappointed with Nokia, i was expecting something better!!!

I am in the UK. The update is not available yet in UK (both on FOTA & NSU)… Last time when it was available I got an SMS from Nokia saying that ‘New software is available for you phone’. I have not got that message yet, so officially the update is not yet available in UK.

You should notice that not all product code is updateable and it also depends on what country you are in.
Use JAFBox to alter your product code to newer ones. Search over the net for JAFBox.
Here’s the keyword “JAFSetup_1.98.62.exe”

i still have the freeze , and the “remove battery thing” i hate it , and many times, the camera says , error , plz restart the phone or sth like that , and everytime i make a play list , when i restart the phone , all the songs in the list are gone , and some are fully gone form the device ! anyone else ???!

I got my 5800 here in Brazil sponsored by TIM The firmware version they have available is 20.0.012. I´m experiencing some halts and freezing on many situations… The NSU does not allow me to upgrade due some stupid regional settings or model number. Do you know where can I find the last 5800 firmware version available without using the NSU? Is ther a site that I can donwload and install bypassing this stupid limitation?

what a performance boost! hardly any lag now and music has definitely improved quality-wise (notably the richer bass compared to 21′s sharp cutting one)

I have updated from v21 to v31, on one of my video file i added some txt at the beginning and save it to replace the original video then when i started to play the video its muted even speaker and volume is on..but try to fastforward the video and sound is there even if you rewind till beginning sound is already there then when i stop and start again, sound again muted unless you FF 1st then rewind back to beginning…bug?

For anyone in doubt – this firmware upgrade, imo is a MUST. Not good on features, but it makes your phone shine like never before. For those struggling with “no updates available” message, the way to upgrade immediately is to change the product code first to one listed above. Note, that this will void any warranty. But, as I said this is an upgrade not to be missed.

Any advice how to downgrade back to v21? My phone becomes slow when opening applications or pressing some buttons, camera functions also became slow in responding, further the sound volume has been reduced…wan’t to go back to version21,pls advise..

The new version of maps locks up and continuously flicks between “bluetooth is off,switch bluetooth on?” – but exiting the maps app fixes it – it is persistant though. GPS takes at least 5mins to connect.
