The XpressMusic News

February 12th, 2009 | 19 Comments | by Ani | Share

It has been a busy week for Nokia and that too for the XpressMuisc Series. With Jeetu reporting an important firmware update on the Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic, taking the earlier v11 to v20. Bad News First, its only working on the Red colored device and NOT on Blue one, and the  Good News is that its available via OTA. After the update the phone got much faster and best of all the Camera now has a geo-tagging feature as it was said in the guides shipped along with the device but was not present in the firmware. And the front camera too is now working. We do have a lot other updates like as reported by Rafe,

# “Faster touch-screen input” (the phone is generally more responsive)

# “Faster internet data download times”

# Geotagging information now available in Camera (finally), plus photo taking now possible with the front (secondary) camera.

# Dictionary application added, with support for multiple languages (as first seen on E66 and E71).

# “Improved e-mail experience” (this includes improved scheduled email retreival)

# App. update application added (as first seen on N85 and N79) – this is used to update individual Nokia applications outside of firmware updates.

# General operation seems smoother, better performance is various applications, including Gallery, plus screen rotations are faster.

# Playing back Flash/FLVvideos had less hiccups, especially on YouTube, where Web on the 5800 now becomes almost as good as a dedicated YouTube client, there’s an article on this coming from Steve shortly…

# ‘Search’ on the standby screen now searches phone content as well as on the Internet

# Cosmetic effects added, especially in Gallery when switching orientation

# Support for OMA DRM, enabling BBC iPlayer programme downloads and other future applications

# The usual litany of small bug fixes.

Updating via PC Suite

You can update the firmware using the Software Updater component of PC Suite.

Updating firmware over the air (OTA)

You can also choose to update the firmware of the 5800 from the device itself. This method is called ‘over the air’ (OTA) updating and is generally the easiest method. However this will use a data connection on the phone. While you can use a 3G data connection a WiFi data connection is recommended for speed, stability and reliability (and potentially costs) reasons.

From the homecsreen, access the dialler (numeric keypad) and enter *#0000#. This will take you to the device updates screen, which shows you information about the current version of the software (firmware) running on your phone. To update the software choose ‘Check for updates’ from the Options menu.

With that update release Nokia also announced their latest XpressMusic Device the 5630. We got hold of the specs from Rick. All in all this is one of those sexy thin devices with a whole lot of features along with the support for N-Gage ;) . I’ll put up my thought in a few days.

  3. Cj Says:

My 5800 is a blue Indian product code and it updated fine :)

  4. Hrishikesh Says:

I bought a red 5800 last month, and its working fine, except for the phone… i can barely hear what the other end is saying, and there are these irritating ups and downs in the volume, at random. Anyone else facing this?
What are my options to get this rectified?

I bought a red 5800 a month back, and am very happy with it, except for the phone part. It is quite useless as a phone. i can barely make out what the other end is saying, and there are irritating ups and downs in the volume, at random.

Anyone else facing these issues? What are my options to get this rectified?

  7. Md Says:

  8. universeguy Says:

i think it doesnt matter what color the phone is. Nokia india is yet to update the latest firmware.

  9. Tim Says:

it downloaded and ran fine on my blue 5800. As for the volume issues, take it to Nokia Care ASAP. I heard they fix something defective in the speaker/earpiece. Much common problem in Middle East – but my Pakistani version (made in Hungary) is fine ;-)

I have the a red one and unfortunately I have experienced Hrishikesh’s prob.  Just tried updating my firmware to 009 but NOKIA PHILIPPINES doesnt have the update yet.  Will this update cure the prob? Can I get the update from Nokia Europe or wherever it may be available? Thanks

  11. Kiran Says:

I wonder how color of the Phone matters for a Firmware Update?!?!? :-O
One other thing. I have seen lotsa people facing this problem of the Pre-Loaded content getting locked after performing the upgrade or resetting to Factory Settings. Does removing the Card before performing the upgrade/resetting to Factory settings help???
Im in India, by the way, and there dont seem to be any updates available yet…….. Not even the 11.0.009!!! :-(

  12. jeetu Says:

guys i found a bug in version 20….wen u try to save voicemail numb in speed dial..it does nt save keeps asking again and again……well everything is working fine…..guys plz report  and more bugs……many people r getting lockcode prblem….

  13. Mike Says:

The voicemail bug is definitely happening on my blue Nokia 5800XM as well. I have added it as a contact for now, but I hope this gets fixed.

Another problem I have spotted (although it happens only when the battery is half full) – In contacts, the groups tab next to ABC doesn’t click or allow a finger press or a stylus press. The same thing happens in the Bluetooth screen. I can’t press down on Paired Devices or Blocked Devices.  (only Bluetooth menu works).  Both problems occur in vertical or horizontal mode.

i think nokia is making us fools

  15. MAC Says:

the 5800 is an overhyped and totally f—-d up product. nokia is becoming a crook like the rest of the cell phone brands. SE sucks, Moto sucks, SAM sucks. I should know, ive tried those brands and i also have the shitty 5800 (irratically slow and unresponsive). So far the n95 8gb that i have is better than all the other crap nokia is producing (although it has a few shortcomings that can be overlooked) . Nokia’s music mngt totally sucks – SE music mngt is 1000 times better. SAMs’ dont have stereo widening and adjustable eq and bass boost. We are all monkeys dancing to their tunes and falling victim to their marketing magic. Hopfully one of them will wisen up and product something really versatile, high tech and with a plethora of useful and  commonsensical functions.

  16. Abbu Says:

Yes, I am having the same problem with my 5800 Xpressmusic Red phone as Hrishikesh said. the up and downs of Volume all times. i think it’s a problem with the phone hardware and there is nothing related with the software. but i am not sure about that. anyway, let me update the firmware and i will let you all know. thanks

  17. hardik makkar Says:

I updated my firmware to v20, all the preloaded stuff is getting locked, facing problem of ” memory full close some applications” , though the phone is perfoming faster…. pleases suggest how can I remove these problems, looks like we have to wait until then new firmware is avaliable

  18. Nidhi Says:

I am not able to update my new Nokia 5800xm from version v11 to v20 using Nokia Software Updater. I get a message :
    “Software update failed
For optimum connectivity, your USB cable should be connected directly to the PC, and not via a USB hub, USB keyboard or laptop docking station.”
    -though i use USB cable.

    Please help…

  19. Kiran Says:

I guess its facing power issues on that USB port. Try connecting it to a USB Port on the rear side of the CPU[ the ones that are directly connected to the Motherboard]. I guess U are connecting to ports on the front bottom of the PC.These are like extension ports that work well for USB thumb drives and other USB devices of lower power requirement. Another thing U wud like to look into will be if UR USB ports are USB 2.0. Although not a necessity, it is better to have them for faster access times. ;-) If you are working on an old machine or a Laptop it is advisable to try this out on a relatively new machine that is kinda State-Of-The-Art. :-D Think of an Office PC where U wont be plagued by problems like Power-Cuts or a failing/slow Internet  Connection. ;-)

I have a Blue Set that I recently updated and it seemed to go through fine. It mentioned that the Update was about 123MB in size which was very surprising. Yeah, the phone feels faster and like most others mention, the preloaded music gets locked up. Strangely some of my Playlists I had created earlier also dont seem to work now. :-(

All the best with the update. ;-)
