Nokia N97 Vs Samsung Omnia HD
I just had a little time to tabulate a few points between Nokia N97 and Samsung Omnia HD. Both of them boast of S60v5 OS with touch capabilities. Where N97 has a full QWERTY the Samsung has the 8 MP Camera. So, if we expect one to offer some cool service, the other too just offers a punch in its own way. Get the full head to head between the two below and tell us what you think is a device to bank upon.

Both of these are really cool phones, but the feature list of N97 seems to be bigger
February 28th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
I wanted the N97 for a long time…until I heard about the OmniaHD.
The comparison fails to mention that the OmniaHD supports wireless HDMI out over DLNA and that the N97 has a resistive touch screen. The only advantages on the N97 are the keyboard, larger internal memory, and the Nokia services, which most people may or may not use.
The Omnia’s camera and screen make it the clear choice for me, especially since it will be out 2 months earlier than the N97, 3 months including the US version.

thnx for the input Jonny.
cant wait to get a hands on with omnia hd and see their adaptation of the s60v5
February 28th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
omnia hd looks better too.. but samsung in india has been a big pain in d a$$! especially with the original omnia.. it was selling omnia in singapore and elsewhere for 29000 indian rupees but it india got it for 37-39 friggen thousand rupees! and forced ppl to buy 8+16 gb card!! .. what wre they thinking? For once I am happy i didnt buy it and got myself a 5800!
February 28th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
Even i was thinking of N 97 but after seeing samsung HD….i have got the complete Fone….touch like iphone…screen bigger than iphone….and most impt thing based on symbian 5th ver……wic i love…..8 mp pix camera..good looking fone……screen looks amazing…size is perfect..weight is good just like my N 95 * gb…..i even loved the orgi omnai but thou it was windows i didnt buy it, but good samsung is gng symbian way…..nokia needs to do better now iam sure lot of 5800 users like me will upgrade to samsung. omnia HD than… nokia n 97…..and all R stuff wic we have in 5800 will work in samsung HD as well thats gr8…….samsung omnia HD rocks…hope the price tag in India is around 30 k…..

Agreed that the Omnia HD is ‘better’ than the N97, but isn’t the N97 more practical with a keyboard, also a good storage space means that it is a very credible ‘net-book’ in many ways.
I must agree that hardware wise the Omnia HD might just trump Nokia, but we all know how Nokia has responded to that kind of tactics in the past!
March 1st, 2009 at 5:20 am
n97 Vs Omnia HD. Depends what people want. A better camera and screen or a keyboard with the n97.
For me its the Omnia HD all the way.
March 1st, 2009 at 9:26 am
“Depends what people want.”
The difference in screen types is also to be considered. Japan will love the stylus input on the N97, but T9′ers and QWERTY fans will appreciate the capacitive on the OmniaHD. Either way, it’s hard to beat a larger OLED with capacitive technology.
I forgot to mention the OmniaHD’s processor. Though the N97 processor isn’t listed yet, the OmniaHD shares the same processor as the Palm Pre.
March 2nd, 2009 at 9:59 am
IMO, 8 megapixel doesn’t necessarily mean it is a better camera. There was a megapixel race with point-and-shoot cameras, but you can clearly see some lower megapixel cameras are better. Smile/face shot etc are actually gimmicky.
The keyboard and the bigger memory of the N97 is a definite plus for me.
March 2nd, 2009 at 4:42 pm
Hardware wise Omnia Trumps N97 in all departments I think. But the software is also very important.
Remember the jesus phone is wayy down the hardware specs, but its the software which makes it the best.
Nokia has also begun to move into the software side of things lately, but samsung has a big way to go about that.
My choice would be the N97 although I would have loved it to have atleast a Xenon flash
March 2nd, 2009 at 10:23 pm
There clearly is only one choice. The Omnia HD. Have you guys seen the video clips on the screen? High definition OLED. No comparison. It is amazing.
March 3rd, 2009 at 10:35 am
For me the deciding factor will be the processor Nokia will use in N97 , still not disclosed as yet , I also did a little comprehensive review of both here

Farhan
March 4th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
good review of Nokia N97, I liked more
March 7th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
The main advantage of Nokia N97 is it has 30 FPS video recording while Samsung Omnia Hd has 24 fps and nokia has physical keyboard(sliding) that helps a lot for faster typing while samsung has only touch sacreen input. If you dont care above two then Samsung is the best.
March 8th, 2009 at 2:03 am
I don’t think anybody is going to miss those 6fps when they see video triple the size of the N97′s. I will probably miss the keyboard, but the OmniaHD is the winner for video recording, regardless of the difference in frames.
March 16th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
@ s.manimaraa:
The Omnia is matches the 30fps VGA recording in the N97. However it trumps it by recording 720P video at 24fps, which the Nokia is incapable of doing. Also, if Samsung incorporates the I7110 camera functions into the OmniaHD (which is probably likely), we can also expect to see 60fps at QVGA resolution.
The bigger issue is that like many of Samsungs recently announced super-phones, they don’t the the market until a few months after the speculated release date (read: Samsung has a habit of continually pushing the release date back a few months, like with the F700 or aforementioned I7110). By then the buzz has died down and the competition has already caught up.
March 19th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
For me, it doesn’t matter if it records in 720p or 480p for two reasons;
1) I will very rarely record movie.
2) The higher resolution probably won’t give you the quality boost you think it will. Compare an 8 MP with an 5 MP phone that has the same lens size and image processing. You won’t see any difference when resized.
I’m not really sure about this widgets the omnia provide. On the videos i’ve looked and, they mostly put the youtube logo to the desktop. Ok, thats a shortcut. The n97 shows of way more useful widgets. Can the samsung even show live data via the widgets?
Now the screen, which you all seem to think is one major reason to to go for the samsung. I don’t. Sure, it may be a little big bigger, and it uses oled so the colors will be great, but i still has the same resolution and that really suck. The browsing, which i do way more than watch media, will be equally good.
From what i can see, the omnia doesnt even seem to have a 3.5 mm jack.
March 23rd, 2009 at 5:08 pm
Yesterday, I have a chat with my friend who work as samsung regional distributor. He said to me that samsung will release several new model with oled screen and the most expensive one will cost me around Rp. 8.000.000,00 (indonesian rupiah). Its around 700 Usd. I think that the price he said to me is the price for the Samsung Omnia HD.
March 25th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
Screen wins hands down for the following reasons
-Size
-OLED (brightness, clarity, battery preservation)
-Capacitive
“From what i can see, the omnia doesnt even seem to have a 3.5 mm jack.”
Yes it does. Check here
March 25th, 2009 at 11:47 pm
Thanks for pointing that out, jonnybruha!
I’m leaning more and more towards the omnia than N97 now, it really looks solid.
If it had and 800x resolution screen, there would be no choice.
I wont hope too much for the 720p video though, 24 fps just isn’t enough, i’d rather catpure 480p with 30 fps then, and judging from the video samples, it seems to have small lags in it (but hey, it’s still beta, so it might go away).
When do you guys reccon it will be in stores?
March 26th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Well, with the amount of memory, keyboard, live time widgets, and the power it punches, the N97 is the obvious choice, I just wish they would hurry up and release it!
April 2nd, 2009 at 10:30 pm
OMNIA HD looks nice but after I saw the videos it seems the touch screen is defective or rather not responsive like N97. I also feel the widgets shown with Omnia are not very useful. But the N97 seems a very practical unit with a lot of features – business or pleasure. Nobody knows any thing about the Omnia applications/softwre. Omnia is surely eye candy but can it truly match the N97 ‘s power and usefulness ???? Think twice unless you are driven only by the HD factor!.
April 8th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Ill buy the N97 if they put the n86 camera, if not, Im a new samsung converted!!!
April 26th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
uhhh maybe u guys need to read this first http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=5313 and then talk about 24fps being crap
April 29th, 2009 at 2:31 am
Any idea about availability in india for both the phones………………..
April 30th, 2009 at 9:09 am
I'm really going to have to say Omnia at this point, since I already have the N95 8gb, and then we'll see after a couple months if my wanting of the n97 is still strong heheh..
May 4th, 2009 at 1:44 am
Fairly accurate comparison, however a few omissions and misrepresentations of the samsung omnia hd. The total storage capacity of the omnia hd for example. Also the DLNA wireless capabilities of the omnia hd have been omitted.
Quote: “The generous internal memory (available in 8GB and 16GB capacity options), with the addition of a 32GB microSD card, allows you to store up to 48GB, which translates to 35 DVD-quality movies or 18,000 8MP photographs.”
“The HD video recording feature enables you to capture precious moments in HD (720p) quality, enjoy HD content on HD TV via DLNA technology and share real-time live video”

May 4th, 2009 at 3:42 am
After going through the specs of both, I dare say Omnia HD looks more and more tempting. But I would wait till its released and been out there for months to go for it. The main things to look for it will be
Battery life – I doubt it will stay more than a day of recharge (just as my N95 )
Stability- Since its samsung, I donno what to expect on the software front and also I dont know the interval of firmware updates
Capacitive screen – On 5800 I have had many instances when I had to use either stylus or that Guitar pick to navigate through some scroll bars etc. This wont be possible on the Omina cos its not resistive
Now back to N97
, Nokia has killed of all the hopes with its inferior hardware a.k.a processor and ram (434 mhz, 128 MB).
I would like to reserve my judgments till I use a actual device but my observations now stand as follows:
The widgets on N97 uses WRT, which will utilize RAM,also if you have a heavy page like Youtube or Even s60blog.com it takes up almost more than 1 MB of your phones RAM(per page)
So in effect trying to browse Heavy pages on the N97 WHILE running many widgets/applications/background threads will not be easy as it seems on the VIDEOS that Nokia has shown us.
Do u guys know that N95 had dual core 332 Mhz processor which in effect will be 664Mhz (at least in theory) with 128 Mb Ram. Which means that the latest “Flagship” phone from Nokia will be underpowered than a phone which it had released TWO YEARS ago ???
Also do you know that the N95 had a 3D chip in it, while N97 doesnt?? I had hoped for a push for NGAGE with this device into the 3D gaming arena. To see what I am talking about PLEASE see the latest screen shots of NFS UNDERCOVER for the IPHONE and compare it with the one in NGAGE!!
I had hoped for a Flagship device from Nokia, one which I will be using for next 2 years, which can take anything that is thrown at it, which can be more productive than any other phone.
The more I look at N97 and Omnia, the more I tend to lean towards the latter
Pardon me for a huge rant and N97 bashing, but Nokia has seriously killed all my hopes with the hardware inside N97.

I believe you are judging the responsiveness of a unit shown in MWC…those are prototypes and the UI will thus differ from the retail units…here's a video to show you the responsiveness of the Omnia HD…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkTMEZLSxAI
As for applications/software, both run S60 Ver 5..so apps and games available are same…
And as far as power is concerned omnia hd owns n97..check the foll. link..

omnia hd now houses a better processor clocked at 800mhz!!!!

I am lucky enough to already have the i8910….and it is superb!!!!! I am am not blinkered or a Samsungnite. I previously owned the 8gb N95 and this is perfect upgrade in every respect. from reading about the the N97 it is not the leap I was expecting, even if it is a month or so away from release. At the end of the day you look at the phone that will best suit your specific needs……
As someone has already commented the article seems to skate over a lot of what the i8910 can actually do. Please actually get your hands on a fully released and working model before casting any judgment on what is a fine device….It really is a multi-media tour de force…..I won't go on about the spec as it speaks for itself.
I have waited along tme for this phone to come out and in my limited opinion, it has been worth the wait…..I talk, I txt, I take pictures and video, I listen to music, I watch films……this is my phone
Damn, I hope I don't souns like an advert!!! LOL One slight reservation, I hope that Symbian and Samsung fully support this phone with apps, software and updates…for FREE!!!!! ;O)
Hope this helps

24fps is way better than 30fps. The difference is that 24 fps gives a filmish look because it is exactly what is used for theatre movies. 30 fps looks more like video. Thats the reason why semipro video cameras now include 24fps in order to find a buyer. So, please, the 24fps is rather a special feature which I appreciate very much.
July 10th, 2009 at 2:22 am
I Have had both phones, actually i have both sitting on my desk right now as i type this. The samsung is a much more powerful device, the screen, processor, gpu, etc…. The n97 does have a physical keyboard and more memory, but the samsung just blows it away with everything including how smooth the ui runs.
July 13th, 2009 at 5:38 am
dude do ur reasearch properly!!! it does have a 3.5 mm jack!!
July 16th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
thank u jonny i was just thinking about the memory storage but when i saw this in my hand n97 looks like a big shit compared to omnia ..
July 18th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
I HAVE THE N97. ITS TRUELY AMAZING, OMNIA IS OK BUT N97 BLOWS OMNIAS FACE OFF
July 24th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
I had an omnia hd for 2 weeks and the quality of the camera lens really lets it down. Can't take a sharp picture in anything other than bright sunlight. Plus the hd video won't sync with the audio. Looks good on paper, and in the bin.
July 24th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Cool story, bro.
July 25th, 2009 at 1:24 am
NOKIA N97 is the best one?
I DON'T THINK SO..
im really dissapointed with this new N97. the reason is :
1. the TOUCHSCREEN is using old technology, N97 is using resistive touch screen which makes it hard to touch, not as good as iphone which use capacitive touch screen. if you have an iphone, you could feel the difference. iphone touch screen is much better.
2. the qwerty keyboard position is not convenient. the space button is located on the right side, not in the middle. its very irritating.
3. many bug on this new symbian OS.
actually i was going to buy this phone, but after i heard this news, i think iphone is better.
i hope nokia can do better for the next model.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:12 pm

and i have 3gb of apps lol.
i have like 70.

i stream foxtell etc =DDDDD
HD looks good but i liike windows mobile because of the apps.
HD beats n97 by a longgggg way.
don't be fooled by the N97 even though it is a fab phone.

IPHONE SUCKS
omnia 1900 all the way.
August 4th, 2009 at 1:15 am
dont forget about SAR >>The rate, at which human head, absorbs the radiated electrical energy produced by the mobile. SAR measured in watt per kilogram and should not exceed 1.6 watts per kilogram<<
in Omnia SAR is 1.07 watt / kilogram ..while in nokia SAR is 0.46 watt / kilogram
August 7th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
hey how did you guys got the Omnia HD ?
I'm wating so long for it to be released in India, Bangalore particularly but still it didn't… ?!?!
I have checked almost all the sites, forums, movies, footages, etc. about the Omnia HD and others in comparison and believe me despite of some minimume shortages which all can be connived for sure and with no doubt because of all the other fantastic features; and I found this bereliant handset very very very grate and powerful… I'm wating impatiently to get my hands on it and own one…
cheers guys
August 27th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
*s.manimarraa….both omina hd and n97 have 30fps recording in vga…..but samsung has 24fps in hd mode…tht makes HD's recording function better….HD also have 5.1 sound with the head set…..
September 6th, 2009 at 9:53 am
i persoanlly think the n97 is better because with the MASSIVE 32gb the better design and the keyboard which is WICKED and the fact that in my opinon the camera is better on n97 yes you can have 8mega pixel but the lense has to be top class the omina lacks this the only thing that sticks out is the hd video recording which im sure would not play on computer etc..
September 26th, 2009 at 2:46 am
the SAMSUNG omnia HD its more better than N97
October 4th, 2009 at 4:03 am
the omnia hd is a great phone not all phones are perfect so it will have some issues!!!!
the n97 is also a great phone and also has some problems. 1 is a multimedia device that is working aroung the hd screen and camera (omnia hd) for marketing. and the other is also a multimedia device that is using the internet and camera and blah blah blah blah.
they are both smart phones and they are both good not the best or great. for these phone to be compaired fairly they would need to be on the same level with specs (omnia is double in mhz and ram) camera is diffrent 5meg vs 8meg. and other things too like the touchscreen. and guys 5800 had a shit screen it was awfull the n97s screen is not tooooo much diffrent the omnias screen is much better. you dont need a pen with the phone so like i said they are on diffrent levels cant compair (I HAVE BOTH PHONES)
FANBOYS grow-up its a phone for F**K sakes they will have a new 1 out in the next 2-3 months so stop sucking corporate company cock.
October 19th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
important thing is resale value too.. u can easily get good value if u want to sell a nokia phone to upgrade… but for samsung…. u need to hv an experience to know .
November 24th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
i have i8910 got it 20days back the screen froze (hung) gave to the service center they say after 5 days that they cannot fix it for they dont have the right software for it ….. so dont buy the omnia hd atleast in INDIA
December 23rd, 2009 at 2:00 pm
Hi Everyone….. I have read all the reviews, I have used Nokia N97 for the past three months and now I am using Samsung Omnia i8910 HD…. Surprised.. No wonder Samsung omnia HD is way ahead of Nokia N97. Specs are mentioned here… but i think specs of samsung omnia HD are not completely mentioned… Go to GSMARENA…. I am pasting shortcut for Samsung Omnia HD comparision with Nokia N97
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone2=2691&idPhone1=2615
January 3rd, 2010 at 5:33 am
Samsung Omnia HD is certainly the better than N97 when it comes to hardware aspect but when it comes to software part (applications, widgets, firmware updates, etc.), N97 is more reliable than Samsung Omnia HD.
March 23rd, 2010 at 8:12 pm
My N97 is in warrany repair (for the 3th time, last 2 times they only change the battery, the phone suddenly turns off, and die), now i want to change it for some other phone, i will try an Omnia HD
