Question about the 3G frequencies available on the phone sold in India – does the phone come with European / US or Worldwide UMTS frequencies? I am also assuming that they are the 3G phone versions that come with WiFi, would appreciate it if anyone can confirm that.
January 4th, 2009 at 11:49 am
Absolutely ravi the phone sold in INDIA is also 3g irrespective of the fact that we dont have 3g here… and wifi is also available…. umts frequencies have not been defined in india but the model we get here is based on euro 3g frequencies

Hi ak
the phone has been with me only fr a day so i am wrking on the review and chk out all the bugs u have talked abt.. thanks
and auto focus is same as in all other phones (eg N82) first press the camera key a lil you will see the box go green and a lil beep once you see that press the camera key completly…. that ways the phone will auto focus… and if the box goes red then it means the lighting is not proper so either you shl switch the light on or if u want to try clicking it still u can go ahead….

Any one who has been using iPhone, can they use Nk 5800 and post their views.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
prebooked my phone and the nokia dealer is saying that ill get it by 6th…
how is the phone??
January 4th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
good idea gaurav i would love to hear their views too….
January 4th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Ya.. as per reviews that i have been reading and comparing them with the iPhone my roomie has, following things have less clarity
1. I saw the accelometer function in 5800, and it blanks out for a sec and then the roated image is displayed. In iPhone, on turning it, the image starts to turn.. Though they both take almost same time, but there is no blackout in iPhone
2. Have no clue if 5800 has the zoom function of images as in iPhone with finger – zoom out and in. also moving of images in iPhone can be done with fingers.. dont know if these are there in 5800.
3. in iPhone we can install applications to do more functions? Is that possible with nokia 5800
January 4th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
lucky you dude. i am still waiting to get my hands on with one
January 4th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
gaurav the blackout in 5800 is i think for a nt even 1/3 of a second so i think it should not be a problem and as u know nokia 5800 is a s60 phone so there will be no dearth of applications a few we have mentioned here
http://s60blog.com/tag/free-5800-applications/
as an on more applications come we will keep u posted…
January 4th, 2009 at 3:49 pm

January 4th, 2009 at 6:01 pm
Is the free headphone limited period offer?
January 4th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
well gaurav i am not too aware of it right now will let u know but i dont think it will be a limited offer… but will surely keep u posted…..
January 4th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
Just picked up the phone from delhi. Rs. 19990 total cost, plus Rs. 600 extra for headphones. Box comes with plectrum, cd, manual, spare stylus, hands free, tv out cable and carry case. Red colour, firmware ver 11. Touch takes a while to get used to, but otherwise a good build and phone. Browser navigation, scrolling, third party app support, rotation responsiveness are some drawbacks.
January 4th, 2009 at 11:59 pm
photos cant b seen by name n if v store in diff folder again it dosnt display by name …
hw to solve this…??
January 5th, 2009 at 12:40 am
Went to mobile store in Chennai and had a try on this model… Not as impressive as iPhone made me… Reaction to touch was bit slow..
Music volume was very good…
I was about to buy it, when i found that all pieces that store has, had 7th and 8th digit of IMEI (Serial no) as 02.. which is said to be bad quality..
waiting for new pieces to come, or will try in some other city
January 5th, 2009 at 5:35 am
Guys…headfones r only for pre-bookers….well my 5800 has a bug…the colour keeps changing…frm blue to red to green….then after using for more time i noticed a big bug in the display…suddenly it wld become dull…the touch wld work perfectly…after i key lock and open again it wld become normal… well i have video to make yr understand… i didnt have any other bug at all… i had 218 songs preloaded.. i loved the phone..thou it takes time to get used to the touch… well the touch was more reponsive than the demo piece… i got the latest firmware with it 11.08.00 so i have given my fone bak and will be getting new piece tom… so guys if yr notice sme real bug in yr fone get it replaced….nokia only replaces it within 5 days frm purchase… so check yr phone properly… will let yr know hw the new one works…i hope new one is perfect….. sehaj bro hw do u have ver 10..coz all official pieces cmes with ver 11…

January 5th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
Please look into an earlier question about videos in the video center. There are 220 of them but none of them can be played. They give the same error about unability to play clip. What are those huge video files if they cannot be played?
January 5th, 2009 at 8:20 pm
when exactly does the screen behave like this? i mean, i will get the phone tomorrow, so can u tell me how do we reproduce it so we can check this at the store itself??? the instance when it acts like this and what makes it better? is it during a call? or just happens randomly? pls let us know..thx
January 5th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
btw jeetu, have u considered sending this video directly to nokia?
January 5th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
Anyone who has purchased 5800 from Delhi… Can you please tell what is the 7th & 8th digit of IMEI (serial No) (Press *#06# to get Serial No on mobile)
January 5th, 2009 at 11:11 pm
well all the readers lets help gaurav lol… i must say again gaurav i am not too sure of this but if u still think so then u better clear your doubt before u buy the device…
January 6th, 2009 at 12:01 am
Nope unfortunately None of the announced Nokia phones are multi-touch not even the N97
For Nokia to do multi touch it has to provide a capacitive touch screen (like IPhone), but they wont bcos of apple’s patents.
January 6th, 2009 at 12:40 am
thanks for the comment bossrulez i agree with u apple has got a patent so in the 5800 we can scroll through the pics by swiping but tht feature is nt in the browser as is seen i i phone.. but hopefully after the patent is over we will see a lot of multi touch s60 phones too…
January 6th, 2009 at 7:55 am
how does opera work in 5800,which version…..
January 6th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Bought the phone in Delhi, IMEI digits 02. Just noticed that there’s a 1mm gap in the phone casing, just above the cam, on the top right corner. Visible in the dark. Anyone else has this build issue?
January 6th, 2009 at 10:51 am
I have faced another peculiar issue last couple of days. After pressing the menu (white middle button), I am not able to get to the “settings”. Double clicking on “settings” icon does nothing. I have to switch the phone off and on to get it working. A software issue. Can you let me know how to see the OS version?
January 6th, 2009 at 10:54 am
well vishwas well this is disappointing wat u are facing but I faced no such problem but I shall keep u posted if something comes to my notice and to see all the details of ur phone press *#0000#
January 6th, 2009 at 11:37 am
@sehaj, Thanks for the quick response. My phone has v11.0.08 itself, so lets see if there is any new update. Please keep posted if you learn about an update.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:38 am
@sehaj, since I have your attention, also comment about the 200 or so video clips, which cannot be played
January 6th, 2009 at 11:39 am
Since I am at it, let me also add that video playback on TV through the tv cable was disappointing. I played the included Batman video on LCD TV and it was really bad. I have not played a video captured through the camera.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:41 am
Its 02 for me. I purchased in Noida.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:56 am
I heard dat nokia anouncd n-gage fr touchscreen n vl b available fr n-series touch screen n not fr 5800…..why????
January 6th, 2009 at 11:58 am
Is dis dat new platform is being instald in n-series touch screen fones.???
By d way wats d 0s in n97 ???
January 6th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
@ vishwas bro no problem anytime right now the latest firmware is 11 so will definatly keep u posted… And with regard to the 200 video I am not sure as my device was a trial device and it did not have those videos but I will let u know for sure. I agree the tv out is not as impressive as I would have wanted it to be..
@100rbh u have heard it right bro the n-gage platform will come with the new N-series touch. The platform is still in the development stage hence not included in 5800 and like 5800 N97 would also be S60 v 5. Hope I answered ur queries properly and let me know if u have any more queries
January 6th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Hi Sehaj,
i am planning to pick this phone from NPD today. What checks do you suggest, that i should conduct at the point of purchase apart from the ones suggested by other bloggers like screen resolution, settings issue and IMEI code ?
January 6th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
guys this is just for fun. its not true, so chill madi
January 6th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
N97 too is based on S60v5. check the following link to see our coverage of the device http://s60blog.com/tag/nokia-n97/
January 6th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
Prajit,
You can do the following:-
1. Check the contents of the sales package. (if anything missing then let the NPD know)
. You can get it replaced within 2 days, so try to use all functions of the device and if something goes wrong go to the NPD and get your device replaced.
2. Check of any anatomical flaws like defect in build quality etc.
3. Try to switch the device on and insert sim card. Now check the IMEI No. (It should match the no. on the box.)
4. Now, go around the phone menu and try to use a few applications, video player, games etc. If anything seems odd, report it then and there.
5. Come back home and enjoy your device
Cheers!
January 6th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
@sehaj, thankx bro fr reply but can v install n play n-gage in 5800 too,bcoz wat i read was dat u can’t play n-gage vrsn in 5800….
January 6th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Can v install s60v3 apps in s60v5 anyways…..I thnk games cn b playd but apps?
January 6th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
yup… no n-gage for 5800 till now. But, I’m sure our friends over at N-Gage will be working on this and in a few months the client will be available. Keep a check on our blog for updates
January 6th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
@saurabh no bro right now n-gage games can’t be installed but we’ll keep u posted and no S60 v 3 apps can’t be installed so we will have to wait for v 5 apps to come and we will in a day or 2 do a post on that too keep checking
January 6th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Hi Another question. How to view pictures in a specific folder on the memory card. I have categorized my pictures in folders. But only way to view them meaningfully is from “Gallaries -> Images and Videos”. But it shows all the pictures.
If I go to a specific folder and double click on a file, I can see the picture. But I cannot advance pictures by sliding across the screen (or any other way). It just shows one pic. I have to go back and double click on another file to see it. Bit wierd. Is there any way to see pics in a specific folder?
January 6th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
Thankx sehaj n ani ,u r doin great job bro….
January 6th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
I’ll keep in touch….
January 6th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
@cranberry.. i just noticed yest the gap in the top right corner ..a slight gap from which u can see a bit of light coming out from inside the phone in the dark..!!
i thot this was only my phones issue.. i guess u guys shud check it too!
its above the volume button b/w the screen n d rest of the phone!
January 6th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
Hi,
The 5800’s out and I want to know why its NOT available in BLACK? The web site says 5800 comes in 3 colours! NPDs say that BLACK will not be launched in India just yet?
January 6th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
The crack seems to be a known issue on most handsets – if you press down on the casing, the crack closes. Maybe Nokia expects us to superglue handsets post purchase!
Any idea how one gets to run Yahoo! Go and Fring on this handset?
January 7th, 2009 at 2:03 am
Gaurav (and others)…pls chk http://www.newlc.com/Retrieving-the-device-IMEI-code.html” rel=”nofollow”>this out
The issue that u r talking abt is for phones pre 2004. for current phones, to know the country code, note the 1st two digits. If it starts with 35 -> Finland (i dont think it makes any difference).
Took me 1 hr to comprehensively dig it just to b sure that u and i were victims of some crazy hoax
January 7th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
hey guys i read in symbian-freak that nokia has find some technique n application “USPTO” which will have multitouch feature…………GREAT! so now vll hav nokia with MUTITOUCH soon……..hope so!!!!!!
January 8th, 2009 at 10:44 am
Sticking to 5800, another bug I encountered is that when the phone is charging and you try to make a call, it cribs saying “contacts memory is full, close some applications to proceed”. Strange.

January 10th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Hi.. Can some one tell me is there a limit on the No. of contacts this phone can store? Or its limited to the memory on the SD card? Any idea about whether its going to be available in ‘BLACK’ Colour also…
Thanks
January 10th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
I guess by now evrybody knws that the fone which was being sold @ arnd 21K – 22K a week earlier is down to 18K – 19K.
I feel so cheated..We should have been given the option of not having the headset b4….
so much for prebooking “special offer”.
January 10th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
@ amit the phone can store virtually unlimited phonebook enteries so dnt worry bro with regard to the color no news right now will let u know as soon as there is any news
January 11th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Guys any idea how to make VoIP calls from 5800. Fring is yet not available for 5800. Please help… !!!
January 11th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Had to return the first handset that I bought due to major defects with the hardware – casing gap, fluctuating caller audio and even a dead pixel! The replacement handset has a faulty accelerometer which needs a manual reset every so often.
Nokia really needs to pay attention to its quality. My earlier N73 was slow, but at least reliable. This one seems way too buggy. I wonder if there’s any such thing as a perfect phone!
January 12th, 2009 at 12:51 am
I have had the 5800 for 5 to 6 days now.
a) Only today I noticied that there is a gap (Rather Crack) in the top right corner of the case. This is really BAD.
b) The expired certificate issue keeps coming up once in a while (Have been forced to reset twice already in 5 days). One is required to backup the phone and then reset it *#7370# and restore back the saved contents to remove the “Expired Certificate” issue. NOTE: IF you don’t backup before reset then your 218 songs will be gone for good.
c) The quality of the camera isn’t good. With N95 one could forget taking a camera when traveling, because its camera was good. But with 5800 one has to carry a seperate camera around.
d) The automatic screen rotate feature requires to stabalize/mature a bit more.
January 17th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
hey, I am unable to use smiley on my phone…:(( that’s really bad
January 19th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
I’ve been having the same -”memory full, close some applications” problem. The worst part is that this is my 2nd Nokia 5800 handset. They replaced the 1st one because it had the speaker as well as the memory full prob.
For the last 2 days i’ve been visiting the Nokia Care center. They have tried everything.. Format, re-install.. It just does not seem to go. Now i’ve been finally told to wait for a software update. My firmware is v11.0.008.
Why was i sold a phone that was not fully developed? Why was i not warned that the software is incomplete? I have not installed any application, etc..and still this problem!..and that too on my 2nd handset??!This is not minor bug.. You cannot open anything but your contacts book when this happens.. No apps, no messages, connections,..nothing!
Does anyone else have this kinda problem?? If yes, any solution yet?
This is sad.. I don’t know how many people have this, but if you are buying this phone, do it with your fingers crossed.. and pray!
I’m from India / Mumbai
January 21st, 2009 at 3:15 pm

I posted my problem about earpiece to Nokia Care online. The following is the reponse I got. I thought it was quite unprofessional.

We regret to hear of the difficulties that you are experiencing with headset of your mobile phone and we thank you for bringing your concern to our attention. January 31st, 2009 at 11:39 am
HI All,
From the various discussions above I gather that the 5800 is NOT such a great buy! It seems that Nokia has launched this without proper testing & it still needs a lot of work, update, etc…. (Or Am I Wrong?) Am really confused … Can someone please help me which is a better buy? E71 or 5800 or HTC Touch Diamond? I am an avg. user and don’t really use Emails on phone.
Thanks in advance ….
January 31st, 2009 at 11:51 am
@ amit i have to disagree Nokia has tested it.. being the 1st s60 touch phone there are def sm issues but it is a great buy as u say that you are an avg user than u will be wasting ur money if u buy the e71 i dont know much about htc but nokia 5800 is def a must buy
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Thanks Sehaj for your reply. Can you help me abt. the E71? Why do you think its a “waste of money”? Would like to also start using Emails (read & reply) and have some music. Games not imp. HTC says you can even open/ read/ write .. word, exel, PDF files. Can nokia 5800 or E71 do the same? Would you consider E71 a good business device?
