ATTN Nokia – Why The Bulk?
Hello people once again,
today while talking to a really good friend Zorawar Sidhu a thought came to both of ours mind. This blog post is in regards to that thought. Why are all the flagship devices of Nokia BULKY?
With bulky I don’t mean heavy I mean big. Today (and I may be wrong) consumers are looking for Features as well as Looks. Nokia in my opinion has always lost to other phone companies in two basic regards. The first being the launching price and second being the looks. I am today going to discuss only the looks.
It is not like Nokia has not made some really amazing looking phones. Nokia has shown that it can deliver in regards to looks as well. Well no points for guessing I am talking about the E71. It is the perfect combination of looks and power. The question that arises in my mind is why not the flagship devices. With flagship devices I mean N96, N95, E90 and obviously the soon to come N97 and if we go down the memory lane then we have the N91 also. Oh! before I forget the leaked video of E75 and E72 too are bulky devices
for which Ani did a post on their obesity.
I know some people with me will disagree over the fact that Nokia distinguishes between the users who want a good looking phone and the users who want a power packed device and some less powerful but good looking phones like 8800, Nokia Prism and the Supernova series have been launched. But I will also stress on the fact that there are users like me who want a good looking phone as well as a power packed phone. Nonetheless I am confident that Nokia has the man power and the brain-power to find a middle path too. Nokia has done it with the E71 and also with the E66 and I hope to see some more really powerful device which are also amazingly beautiful.
People do leave in your comments so that we can see how many people want to tread the MIDDLE PATH like me or want TWO DISTINCT PATHS. Hoping to see some active participation

In my opinion, the real flagship for the N series line right now should be the N85 and not the N96. The N85 is definitely a looker. It is compact, sleek and sexy!

ya andrew true i think i frgt to mention n85 too it is another example of sleek yet powerfull…. hope the Nokia caters more to the people who tread the middle path

I would have loved N85 with a Xenon

There are many reasons for Nokia’s bulky flagship devices
Major is the OS AKA S60 which requires a larger processor
Secondly to be a flagship it requires serious multimedia capabilities. N96 > N85 in such case as the N96 has a dedicated video processing chip which the N85 dont have.
Third the camera, whcih for a flagship modle have to be very powerful which makes the device bulky
Fourth all other features like connectivity,GPS,UPNP, variuos sensors which are not found in Flagship devices makes it bulky
All said, they can try to make it smaller in coming devices, but they have to try

Kuch pane k liye khona padta hai….

i hope the next Communicator will be thin but its a bonus not an important factor,i still prefer the functions and specifications over the looks,i know am a heavy user but also there are thousands of thin and nice looking phones from Nokia. If i wanna Communicator with the thickness of 5310 XM then i need to wait for ages till technology can satisfy my needs.

I have that thought too for a long time ago, and Nokia stays behind SE and Motorola in those cases, look and software.. They might not be that good, comparing to Nokia, but they have the middle term

I agree. N85 is way better. Better hardware, less memory though and cheaper.
My 2 favorite phones are E71 and E51, both from E-series (sorry E66 funs but i don’t like slides). For me all the N phones are fugly cause are bulky and made with toy like plastic. Thank god for iPhone. Nokia needed a slap to wake up and learn what style means.

I cannot name one phone, who has the same capabilities , and look thin or pretty.
The xperia looks Ok, but doesn’t have the same amount of hardware.
The Instinct looks shiny but, as big as the N97, and without qwerty…

I think we are going to see something soon in 2009, from NOKIA in this regards.
Something like the N97 without the QWERTY keyboard and the bulk.
The technology is already there, they just have to package it well.
Lets keep our fingers crossed

I Love nokia Phones the thing they are bulky doesnt matter. The thing em wooried of why nokia symbian softwares are slow. Most of the time they do hang up and restarts automatically. I am currently using Nokia E90. I love it and i did never expect the same software prob by this cell but it do restart automatically somtimes when i listen music with Edge…
Thanks

I had N82. I liked it very much, it was bulk. world is changing so fast that I hope to get slim like 5220 Xprees Music and minimum same power as N82 and Surely Touch like 5800

I have the 5800 and people seem to think it’s bulky or plastic-y. Having owned it for a month, I don’t think either. It doesn’t feel plasticy or breakable. I don’t think a phone HAS to have metal on it. It’s also not very big at all. The touchscreen is a good size, but the phone is very neat.
That said, some of the phones up there ARE pretty fat. But then, Blackberry and iPhone are very wide. They’re slim, sure, but it’s a lot easier to hold the Nokias in one hand.
