Nokia Ovi Just Got Bigger And Better

December 2nd, 2008 | 2 Comments | by Ani | Share

If you have been reading my blog then you sure know what Ovi services offer at present. The idea is to break free from the captivity of your PC and now Mac and make the web now by hands. If you have been using these services, you know how easy it has made to share you media viz. pictures, videos and audio with your friends right from your device. Also with the advent of Files on Ovi, you can now directly access your files right from your device. Sync you calender to Ovi as well for better performance and save your address book online too. N-Gage as well is a part of this and finally the Nokia Email that we have been testing out. First, let’s talk about Nokia Maps 3.0 which was made available for download today. It is now integrated with Ovi and works in your browser of your desktop. So its like going back to the PC but there is a twist.

1. Nokia Maps 3.0 brings new context-aware & location based services, opening up a new world of possibilities through:

•Rich 2D, 3D, satellite, hybrid and terrain maps,
•Easy to use pedestrian navigation with smart features helping pedestrians better orientate in a city or anywhere outdoors,
•Voice guided car navigation with enhanced safety features, e.g. speed limits,
•Real time Traffic information and speed camera warners,
•Current Weather information and forecasts where it matters the most to you,
•Enriched premium POI content by Lonely Planet, Via Michelin for Travel, and Wcities for Events and Movies.
•Maps on Ovi takes the Nokia Maps experience to a completely new dimension by extending the service from your mobile device to the web on your PC desktop.

Following are a few screenshots of the service I tried a few minutes ago. The service is linked to your Nokia Account and you can save your favorite places. Zoom in and Out and switch from 2D to 3D view. Alongwith a lot of other settings. It essentially is Maps on your Desktop PC with amazing graphics and detail. Sadly a few things have to be worked out for India as the coverage is only limited to major cities but luckily the major National Highways have been covered. Click here to try this service.

2. Okay, the second thing that ovi will witness is Mail on Ovi. This service was earlier announced on 4th Nov. 2008 with Nokia Life Tools. Click here to download the Data Sheet. It will give users 1GB of storage space and spam filters to block unwanted emails. Creating a Mail on Ovi account will give users access to their email, as well as cross access to other Ovi services, both on the mobile phone and on the PC. The beta version of Mail on Ovi will roll out globally in December 2008 in 12 languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hindi, Bengali, Tagalog, BahasaIndonesia and Bahasa Malaysia on all currently shipping Nokia Series 40 devices, with many more languages to be added later. The web access version will launch in February 2009.

  1. MAISON CHAPLIN by Carlos Silva Says:

For sure Ovi is one of the best social networks in the world right now (I speak for myself), but it fails in one thing: MARKETING.

Where is Nokia advertising Ovi in the world?! I don’t see a single ad except in the own Nokia websites or S60 relatd blogs.. :O

Without users, why so many efforts? ;P
Anddd.. it fails in one more thing: it is available in English only, it should be up to other languages too (spanish, portuguese, french, chinese..) etc etc..
