Initial Thoughts On Nokia 5800 XpressMusic In India Are Coming In – Whats Your Take?
After we told you all about the online pre-booking of the Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic device here in India a couple of days back, we saw a lot of reactions coming in. So in this post I will highlight the first initial thoughts from some of my readers here and their take on the device. So if you still have not had your hands on with one and want a unbiased opinion then you are in the right place. Just read on to get more familiar with the first S60 touch offering from Nokia. From Price to Pictures, we have it all and that too from different cities of India
. Want to share your thoughts with the world, well just leave a comment below

Vishwas brings in his thoughts and has this to share,
” OK. I checked the demo piece at NPD today. For overall experience I give it 8.5/10. Some of the things were slow. For example, camera is still slow (even if better quality), qwerty keyboard was slow, display rotation from portrait to landscape was extremely slow, causing me to wonder whether it will change at all. It did change the orientation but not before blanking out the display for almost a second. Hope the final OS takes care of this. Stylus was toy like yes. Speakers, I was hearing so much about them but did not find them loud at all. Max volume in a crowded mall did not sound as if they are great speakers. What else. Yes, the camera still and video quality is good. GPS/GPRS did not work, nor did WiLAN, so could not check anything regarding maps and internet. In terms of booking and price and goodies, the price is 20k. 600/- for the headphone (optional). No more goodies promised, maybe a box of chocolates thrown in. Phone will be pre-bundles with 100 hindi+100 english songs and special AR Rehman album of 9 songs. Delivery date is not fixed, they just say first week of jan. He mentioned he has to make payment to Nokia in full before he receives the order. He is not likely to do that before 31st.”

If you think you need more then check what Zorawar has to share,
” i went to the dealer yesterday and lay my hands on the demo set. the built quality is pretty decent and so is the finger touch response. speakers dissapointed me a little but the guy there said the final versions for sale will have a better quality. also he said that this is not the final software. about the Sennheiser headfones, he said he might be able to adjust them in the total price and give me a best buy. so that way the phone should cost me 20 grands includin the Sennheiser headsets. i also used the wifi on the fone and the google maps too. the comfort level is very good, pretty handy, but will have to get use to the all touch screen, specially the kyeboards for faster typing, but that should not be an issue. also the camera gave great results with the flash as i clicked the guy at the counter only. the guy has confirmed the delivery on 3rd jan, 09.”

And finally we have a Chennai’s take on the device,
“I checked out the device at an NPD here in C’nai. Device does look plasticky and does not look like a 20k mo device. The photographs all over the do justice to the device. The UI itself was slick and familiar (same ol symbian) with larger icons everywhere. Checked out most of the features (messaging, thumb pad, hand writing recog., mini qwerty etc)., all work fine. I found the stylus worked the best with zero wrong inputs and the telephone style keypad (abc) (def) style worked with zero errors (no typos) for messaging. Wi-fi was quite fast and i liked the Google Chrome like thumbnail view of pages recently visited very attractive. Pictures were OK. Could not test GPS as we could not get it to work for some reason. I also realized that its going to take sometime to get used to the device as there are many ways one could do the same thing (media bar, menus, shortcuts..) It was fun pre-booking
”

I would love to see some comparaisons of 5800 to HTC, Samsung, iPhone and Blackberry devices. What are the advantages and the desadvantages of the 5800, compared to the others?
December 26th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Here is what I got to hear in Pune…
I had pre-ordered it since I am looking out for a second phone, an addition to my N82.
The NPD in Pune, well they were pretty well versed with the phone, not that it matters, but it does give have an impact on buying decision.
The NPD in Pune said, I would get delivery on the 2nd of January, 2009. The other stores (multi brand) would get the handsets to sell only after the 23rd of January.
A pair of headphones (valued at INR 4500)… not headset… of a brand he could not recall, but would let me know in 24 hours. The order had to be confirmed before the 31st for me to be eligible for ‘special edition’. This edition will not be available afterwards.
The price of the 5800 is INR 21839.
I was also told that I could collect a few activation codes for free on the purchase of the 5800.
I checked out the phone and I really think that it’s a good phone, the touchscreen is a little unresponsive… you need to ‘double click’ the icon to open or start an application. The vibration confirms whether the touch has been registered by the device. Did not spend too much time as I was in a bit of a hurry.
I thought the screen was really good, at last a proper 16:9 ratio screen, now one can easily watch all those DivX movies. The other aspects seem to be well covered by others in their comments…
That’s it from me…
December 26th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Oh just one thing I forgot… the speakers were rather loud… I did not have problems with the speakers like others have reported…

Heya!!
i’ve juz got a luk at the beauty-5800.
it luks gr8…. whoever says it doesnt luk a 2ok fone, wat do they mean????? does it means that it luks much xpensive or do they mean it luks cheaper???
well, i dont agree f they say it luks cheaper, coz then they wudnt have seen e90 or probably n95..
i was amongst the first lucky buyers of n95, as it came in as a monster fone, boasting a much hyped-2gb memry…
neways, the main point here is about the phone….
i saw it, held it, played with it…
and the outcome was_-_-_-_ IT WAS FUN!!!
though the orientation problem was definiotely there, but i found one mare lax in this as wen u r playing any song, and u press the pause button, it takes about ahlf a milisecond to register that pause. it doesnt stop immediately..
juz a small hitch, nothng big!!!
i prebooked it, n the confirmed its delivery on 3rd jan. the cost here in rohini sec-3 delhi is 19,999INR

hey.. i love your post… the way u have provided opinions of bloggers across is quite unique…like it…
but not more the device itself.. love the looks… i just booked mine on http://www.nokiaprebook.com and now cant wait to have it in my hands? do u know wat al colours wil it be available?
December 26th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
its coming in 2 colors – Blue ‘N Red
December 27th, 2008 at 7:38 am
I’m wondering if vishwas had a lot of programs open in the background on the demo unit. I’ve been using my 5800 for some days now and am actually finding it surprisingly fast to use. (although sometimes changing the screen orientation could be faster, a 1 second delay doesn’t sound right)
December 28th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
2day i saw the advertisement of 5800 on t.v…It was a short one and stated ”soon your touch will play music” sms touch to 55555…Wow i am excited..I saw it on national geographic…Release is expected very soon …Cheers guys…
December 29th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Hi bhavya
i also booked d phone from the store(Sushil telecom – m2k). how much he is charging for headphone from u?
December 29th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Freebie (for Pre-ordered 5800only) is a ear phone not head phone. Make is “Sennheiser” which is a well known brand for sound quality. The Bangalore NPD indicated the model as LX90 which can be seen on net.
December 30th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
Well As u all guy r waiting for the phone 5800, so was i in USA and i just got it . but to tell u frankly its not as good i expected it to be.
1) Speaker Volume is just not great its egaul to N73 and i was expecting it to be somwat like the other express music nokia phones.
2)very slow browser even on wlan
3)there r hardly any software available for it .which sucks
a lot and dat was d reason i got nokia.
4) after loading it data (my contacts music etc personal data) it becomes slow as other nokia phones do. i had always thought that nokia will improve the symbian 60:5 touch but it suck same as all previous OS for nokia.
5)there r many times when u open an app the screen goes blank.
i know u all guys this that its all the firmware/OS problem and very soon nokia will provide us with an update for fixing such problems. But my dear frds just think for a while that nokia had the same issues with the other previous phones and those problems where never solved by firmware update etc instead what nokia did was to launch an other new phone (higher model) to fix that problem.
One thing more those how can wait till may june n97 is going to lauch and u can see that its better than 5800 and after that n98 .
i have been using nokia phones from 12 years . i use to think nokia is the best but now i dont know y its not so the other companies although launch less features on their handsets but they never slow down and all their provide work dam smoothly . From now No more Nokia for me i have been trying to make each phone work rite all these years now its time to switch brands
December 30th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Nokia site indicates Black color apart from Red & Blue.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Good comment Lauri. I am not sure if there were applications running in the b/g. So another ray of hope.
December 31st, 2008 at 4:42 am
Guys most people have loved nokia 5800… i have used my frds phone for a day and i loved it… iam just waiting to get mine….been using nokia since 10 yrs never had really any problem with it…been using n 95 8gb since 1 yr ( loved it ) with out any problem…. nokia keeps on giving us software updates,,,wic improves our fones i dnt think there is any fone tats perfect… u can go to all brands ka forum… u get complaints in all… but to knw wic brands r best is in 100 fones hw many have problems ( just a example ) well nokia fones get very less complaints….
December 31st, 2008 at 8:33 am

December 31st, 2008 at 2:07 pm
ok i just came back after pre-booking the phone from trinity telecom- mumbai!
pros:
screen very sensitive
camera is good
nice features like the shortcut bar
qwerty keyboard is awesome
feels good and nice in hand
cons:
speakers
accelerometer (esp d demo piece’s was ***** up right)
racing game is sluggish
zooming and swiping through pictures in gallery is awkward
conclusion: though there are downfalls i thnk all the cons can be rectified through a firmware update… or better it already mayb rectified for the final retail peice unlike the demo and thats why i booked the phone
btw sennheiser headphones are free ..il be getting my phone on 5th jan and the price is not fixed ..its either 19800 or 19900. iv even asked them to throw in a scratch guard free of cost inside the package.. but there isnt a scratch guard made for 5800 yet in india so they will let me know
December 31st, 2008 at 2:09 pm
oh and the phone is only in two colors ..here in india!!
red or blue..they said black isnt great cos the silver lining comes out quickly
December 31st, 2008 at 2:52 pm
i also pre-bk my tube in indore at agrawal npd,i ask them abt headphones & they told me that oniy few lucky one can get the headphone after paying 600-650 nt every 1 have option to purchase the headphone, what a **** every npd tell diff story 4 headphone, the nokia site should gave all the details 4 pre booking, otherwise npd’s can resale the headphone on there own cost
December 31st, 2008 at 2:52 pm
I finally got the magical call today
Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is priced at Rs 18750/- in Ludhiana, Punjab.
No headphones. A little surprise gift maybe, don’t know what exactly it is. Delivery by 5th Jan for sure.
December 31st, 2008 at 3:24 pm
on the voucher that u get in return for the 2 grands u pay…on the back of it its return pre booking is from 20th dec – 15 jan or something!!
waz happ nokia..1st u delay it…then u rush it !!!
December 31st, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Why are the prices so different in different places? Yesterday I booked the phone from Bangalore and its final price is 21834/-. You get the Sennheiser LX90 and couple of tickets to a concert for free with the phone, but that does not explain the price difference!
December 31st, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Guys just got the lastest news…5800…launched….it will be getting my phone tom…. all dealers will be getting stock by tunite…..guys just check with yr dealer….iam so happy….new year, new phone….
December 31st, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Chennai NPD indicated price as Rs.21839 but nothing in writing. This includes free Sennheiser and no more. This is almost same as Bangalore NPD price. I booked at Chennai paying an advance of Rs.2000 and the NPD promised delivery on 2nd or 3rd Jan.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:54 pm
To jeetu
Where did u get the news jeetu??Plz confirm, buddy

Hi Guys,
I came to know that 5800 XM Firmware ver. 10 has lots of bugs in it & apparantly that slows up the phone as well, including weird errors as well.
Just saw in the website that New Firmware has been released – Ver. 11, which fixes a page full of bugs with the older firmware.
Just check out the below link by Ani:
http://s60blog.com/2008/12/nokia-5800-xpressmusic-firmware-expected-update-to-v11008-full-change-log/
I am just wondering if Nokia India is shipping the phones with the new firmware? I ev also pre-booked my set here in B’lore, but, after reading the Change Log as given int he above link, I feel to double check the firmware version before owning the phone.
Can any of you guys please update on this?
You can check Nokia Phone Firmware Version by typing in *#0000#.
January 1st, 2009 at 1:27 pm

January 3rd, 2009 at 9:22 pm
Firmware is 11.0.0.1.nice phone but 18000 will be a nice bargain.
January 5th, 2009 at 12:44 am
an iphone copy, that too in slow motion…. not a iphone killer for sure!!!!!
my 4k chinese touch phone with a 3.2inch screen, 4 ear deafening speakers, recorder, camera (with video and editing facilities), normal keypad etc. is far better…
only wish they had a windows os and wi-fi….would pay whatever the cost!!!
Nokia has failed…
January 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Dear friends,
I got my phone on 3rdJan and after 2 days of rnd I am glad to let you know that this is an awesome phone for this price band (Rs.21800/-) . Mind you guys however that this is no comparison to Iphone or for that matter any other windows or palm or google. This is a symbian phone, PERIOD., now the good news for all the enthusiasts out there, i got a free Sennheiser LX 90 Headphones MRP Rs.3990/- absolutely free(check the link http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_en.nsf/root/private_headphones_style-line_500506 )I have gone thru almost all, the departments i hope
and i must say i am very impressed as this is the best symbian phone, Wi-fi, A-gps, Music player, RDS Radio, Video, camera, Bluetooth, etc etc all work like amazingly. proximity sensor , accelerometer, and touch screen is also smooth, 8 gb comes preloaded with 100 english and 100 hindi numbers. there is a very nice settings wizard, that helps us to configure emails, and gprs, etc settings. I had no probs configuring the same. sunliight visibility might be tacky if you have set brightness at lower levels, advise you to keep it at maximum, cause battery is excellent 2nd day and still got 70 % juice left, so no problems. Sound uality is very nice, speakers sound just right not too loud but crisp. OVI suite is one hell of a feature, will surely give itunes a run for the money. Will be glad to answer any queries.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
@binit tanna
u can keep the chinese phone for an year.. if it lasts also til that time ..its gonna only land up as a rock.. since govt is banning all chinese phones w/o imei number!! lol! u cn gawn braggin abt ur 4k rock!!
btw all across the world ..whereever its launched the 5800 is surpassing expectations! so pls next time say somthn sane!
it not be an iphone.. its more than that minus the fast speed mayb
iphone is quick n responive ..hell yeah
but it dont got no proper 3g and gps ..its locked.. ur paying 10grands more doesnt have bluetooth , no flash support, no mms, no video recording and a 2mp camera
nw if nokia removed all these features on the tube.. it wud def have been more quicker and responsive..its common sense the less features less soft load on the hardware and i.e more memory for other stuff !
January 5th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Hi,
I had prebooked my 5800 xpressmusic in Hyderabad (Rs 21830). I got my phone on 2-Jan itself along with sennheiser earphones.
The phone is good. I tried browsing internet by using wi-fi and it was decent.
Sound is clear and camera is decent too..
However, When i try to play the preloaded videos i get a message saying “INvalid Clip”..
I have contacted the NPD and haven’t received a solution yet.
Else the screen resolution is good…
January 5th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
i got my on 3rd and have been using it for 2 days, seems to work like a charm so far. minus the games and softwares available for the phone which is a major drawback for a symbian handset i think in overall performance the handset is gr8 and keeps up to the price tag nokia are offering it for.
few pro’s and con’s from me…
con’s-
the camera didnt impress me that(n73 is better), motion sensor is a bit sluggish(takes a few secs to respond, loud speaker output isnt loud compared to n73, and lastly the menu is confusing…dont know which damn option requires a double-click(will learn with time though)
pro’s-
latest firmware v11, music with headset is kewl, got 200 preloaded songs in the memory chip, build quality is not as bad as hyped.
handset was a head turner, was uisng it in the train and had guys envy it(co-incidently even the iphonite sitting opposite me)………..
January 5th, 2009 at 11:12 pm
great review amar job well done…. hope u enjoy the device and do keep giviing us your views…
January 6th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Can you please tell from which city you purchased and what is the 7th and 8th digit of IMEI (Serial No)
January 6th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Gaurav this is just for fun. The 7 & 8 th digit number thingi is a only for laughs. It holds no ground for the quality of the device or where it was made. I hope you understand
January 6th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
oh my god switched on my handset this morning and the dialler on the first screen was not responding, neither was the green dialler as well the contacts…checked the menu and messaging wasnt opening either….did cold reboot nothing happened still the same problem….couldnt do a hard reset since dialler on the main screen wasnt working….reset the phone to factory settings and still no luck….hadnt used my handset even for 1 day….went to the nokia dealer i got it from this morning and they checked and memory card was corrupted….they got it replaced for a new one…..woooaaaa !!!! now thats a bad experience i had with a nokia handset 1st time in 10 years…. i had only installed the Ashton Martin theme and opera mini on the mmc, was wondering whether these were causing problems….another major problem, i pluged the 5800 charger into my n73 and n70 and their batteries died out completely, had to get them replaced….I ADVICE USERS NOT TO USE THE 5800 CHARGER INTO ANOTHER HANDSET….maybe a bit high voltage….so far bad day for me….spent nearly 1000 bucks for travelling and new batteries…..
January 6th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Thanks a lot for the info on 5800 charger, which should not be used with other mobiles [:)]
January 8th, 2009 at 12:57 am

I love this 5800! Great going Nokia!
January 13th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
scratch guards have sprung in the market.
January 13th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
It depends on connection bandwidth. Its amazing using 2MBPS broadband and a wireless lan connection!!
January 19th, 2009 at 12:03 am
Hi AB,

January 22nd, 2009 at 9:32 am
I got my 5800 on Jan 2 at 7 pm at the Nokia Priority Dealer at Jayanagar, Bangalore. The photographed me,cut a cake and gave me a bouquet. The Nokia guy told me that I was the first person in India to buy the 5800.I am not sure if he was pulling a fast one.
My problems:
1) The sound from the ear speaker slowly started fading.I took it to Nokia care and they replaced the speaker. The guy there told me it is a common problem with 5800.
2)All the songs that came pre-loaded have disappeared and I have not been able to transfer any songs through Nokia Music.
Any suggestions?
SVL

Pl. inform how to configure e-mails & GPRS
February 3rd, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Oh
I think Da Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic is one of the best phones on this planet. If we count features, price and specs.I own a nokia 5800 .I bought it from Tata Croma ,Ahmedabad with extended warranty.
I also hv a Nokia 5700.
I hv done extensive research on the net regarding this phone and I think only 1 thing i found dissappointing is the proccesor speed of the Nokia 5800 which is half of the iphone.
Otherwise it is better than anyother touch screen phone.I also compared it with Blackberry Storm which my uncle bought. It is much better than the Storm.
February 7th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
Excellent phone! I am liking it!!
February 16th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
