Voice Guided GPS Navigation Comes To India

October 27th, 2008 | 2 Comments | by Ani | Share

I had somehow not been able to keep up with the events going around but a couple of my reader had asked me about Maps, GPS and Navigation in India. With Google Maps performing well on S60 v3, I was more than happy. Nokia Maps are a big thumbs down in India. Although they have been working great in the western countries but when it comes to India they have been no good. But lately Motorola launched its touchscreen GPS-enabled phone offering navigation maps and landmarks of 30 Indian cities this festive season. That’s Right finally some Real Navigation. The fun not only ends here. Its the first Non-Symbian flip device to offer this service ;)

The phone has satellite based GPS which offers consumers lifetime free GPS navigation maps and landmarks of 30 cities and allows voice-guided navigation across major national and state highways. Well I’m not sure on the free part but the service looks promising. And it is said to work straight out of the box without even inserting a SIM card. ;)

I had still been wondering when would India get to see some real Voice guided GPS and Maps and I guess Motorola has made a good start. Really would love to try this in action and give you feedback on how it did. I have been using Nokia Maps and GPS for sometime but they have totally failed in terms of navigation in India. Google maps have been the same. If Motorola can pull this one off then I guess this would be great. So for a company known for its edge defining designs, will this prove to be a winner or will this cast away like its predecessors A series phones? I for now have backstage information that Nokia too will be launching a service soon but how soon is not for sure right now. Will update you when things become more clear.
