The Dark Side Of Nokia’s Comes With Music Service

October 20th, 2008 | Comments | Posted in News, Reviews | by Ani

Recently the Comes With Music (CWM) service went live in UK. The service is very promising as you get a year whole of access to your favourite music right on your phone. It has a huge library to choose from and I am impressed with their collection. There are still a few Bands Missing (like I was unable to find Linkin Park or Dave Matthews Band to name a few) but still for a start I had a whole lot of options from the Regional Side. A good collection of Bollywood Hindi and Folk Punjabi Songs were already up and ready for download. Kudos for that!

But there is a dark side to the service as well.
Things that if tweaked can do wonders to this service.

(what the service offers in a quick screen capture)

  • It is only available to people who BUY A NEW device that supports Comes With Music service.
  • Only a few devices are Compatible (Yes, No support for Nseries phones leaving aside N95 8GB). What is Nokia thinking? The site only displays Nokia 5310 and N95 8GB. I’m sure the new 5800 will come up soon. But Not N96, N85 or the likes?
  • It is only for one year. No renewal of subscription at present. In case you want to get the service again, you would have to buy a new device. You also cannot get the subscription separately. This is simply crazy.
  • Some Artist are Missing.
  • Windows-DRM protected Media. No soup for Mac lovers, which would not target the Mac crowd altogether. What a waste of the service here.

(A simple search I did which brought up punjabi songs as well :) )

Conclusion: Completely Avoidable At Present but good to experiment around with if you want to. :)

  • I think Nokia is going on the right track....at least some initiative to kick iTunes out. As far as the lack of supported devices and renewals is concerned they are going to introduce more of it really soon(i saw a video of a nokia representative talking about renewals and devices...and his responses were positive).
