E71 Screensaver = The iSaver
Well this time I was on my way to Paris to visit a few friends. I actually had this planned for months and now when the time had come I had just the gadget to take with me – Nokia E71. Thats right the full QWERTY sexy little thing. I know you would say that I compromised on the camera a bit but on this trip it was more important for me to keep in touch with my mails and of course you through my blog.

Well the point today I want to share with you all is that a while back I had replied to Charlie’s Post of add, divide and multiply at the Nokia Conversations about the no good screensaver we have in the high end S60 Smart phones. Practically you couldn’t even see what the screensaver displayed be it date, time or picture. I know that a few S40 devices came with animated cool screensaver but why was this not the case with the S60 version. Well, after giving my feedback I literally forgot about it and it just happened by chance that I discovered the something very interesting in my E71 when we were 2 hours from reaching Paris. I was in a trance state. Half sleepy half awake. I took out my E71 from one of my pockets don’t remember which one to check how much time was left. Somehow I accidently pressed the four way navigation key and boom, there was the best ever screensaver I had ever seen. Take a peek below.

This I feel is a more useful thing as now you dont have to strain your eyes as you did to look at the practically invisible custom screensaver and nor do you need to unlock the device. Good job on the part of the designers. The best Part is you get to see the time with real ease. As the title of the post goes, The E71 screensaver really saves your Eyes from a whole lot of strain. Remember these words are coming from a doctor. Thus the all new E71 ‘i’ saver is here.
So I feel Charlie is constantly listening to us and making sure that the coming products are more user friendly. Good Job Charlie.
How does this work?
Your E71 should be locked.
On the blank screen (or when the regular screensaver is there) just press any of the four navigation keys or the d-pad center button.

If you like this feature i think you are easily impressed. Google search a s60 app called largetime. It is a free screensaver for s60 devices that puts a huge clock on your screen while it is in standby. It looks great and also shows a large message icon when you have a new sms or email. No need to touch the phone, it is displayed always.
Once installed to your phones memory, go to themes, screensaver and pick largetime. I have used it on all my s60 phones with no trouble

There are two reasons why i like this feature.
1. It’s an inbuilt feature (no 3rd party hassle)
2. I got it when i needed it the most
I have used other screensavers as well which are exactly as you say but all are again bit hard on the eyes unlike this one.

Anything built in is better than 3rd party.
Any organ (built in) is better than Prosthetic in the medicine (or Dentistry for me) is better.

One of the main strengths of s60 is the vast amount of 3rd party software available, but i do realize that some apps are just not worth the trouble they cause once installed. I think the largetime screensaver clock looks much better and is easy on the eyes as it is high contrast and takes up 1/3 of the screen

I dont think 3rd party software can really be compare to human organs, lol. There are many apps that add either new functionality or simply do the same functions better. I do believe that there is a large percentage of apps that do feel like add-ons and thus take away from the user experience, but the ones like largetime feel and act like they are part of the oem software.
You should try it before commenting on it

Bonjour Everyone..!
@ Ammar
I feel we shud be flexible as one can have a in born genetic defect too. So seeking medical help is reasonable. The earlier screensavers really needed a make over and to find a new one in E71 could not have been better
@ Gdigenis
I agree with you on this note however I never did say that largetime was no good (I mentioned other screensavers). I only meant that at present i’m happy with the new screensaver in E71. I would give it a try for sure.

Hi,
I don’t seem to be able to utilise this time function on my E71…

wait till the phone goes on power saver and then press and hold any navigation key. it should work

It doesn’t work for me either… When I press and hold a navigation key, it says “press unlock and then the function key”.
I also notice that the screen stays on the main screen. Is there something I should set for it to go to power saver mode?

dear Erwan
it can be show when you press and hold a navigation key in a blank screen
home screen—-keypad locked—-wait a minute—-blank screen is appeared—-press a navigation now —-a power saver screen is show
