Sony Ericsson P1i : A Review

June 22nd, 2008 | 4 Comments | by Sehaj | Share

Hello readers recently i got my hands on a Sony Ericsson P1i so i am reviewing the phone for all you people out there. The phone uses the UIQ 3.0 software platform, which is based upon Symbian OS 9.1. This phone is an improvement of the Sony Ericsson P990. The phone according to me is a very good looking BUISNESS phone. I am posting the Un-boxing pictures of the phone.

The box of the packed P1i comes with the phone(obviously) the company provides two ways to connect the device to your computer one is the data cable and the other is the connecting port. I personally prefer the bluetooth but all those users who don’t have a bluetooth in their computers and laptops can connect the device using the data cable or the port. Again given a choice i will prefer the data cable as it is much easier to carry while the port becomes too cumbersome. But all those people still using a desktop can and will prefer the port as it is so much easier just connect the phone to the already connected port. The box also conntains headphones a very beautiful suede cover for the phone and an extra stylus and also a 512 mb micro SD card(can vary from place to place).

Now coming to the design of the phone. This phone retains the very square or if i may say a rectangular shape of P990 but it is much more sleek. The dimensions of the phone are 106 x 55 x 17 mm with a weight of 124 g. It is quite lighter as compared to the P990. As all of you must be aware that this is a TOUCH phone the screen is huge it is heaven for people who like to browse internet on the net. The phone boasts of a TFT touchscreen, with a size of 240 x 320 pixels, 2.6 inches. The phone also comes with Handwriting recognition. In addition to the touchscreen the phone comes with a Rocker QWERTY Keyboard with two letters sharing on one key as you can see in the image below i am not too comfortable i am more in favor of the regular QWERTY keypad but then this Keypad has been incorporated to make the phone more sleek and more compact.

The phone allows browsing but it comes with a HTML(Opera) Browser all the people used to the regular S60 browser will find this very complicated. But we have to remember that the phone function on Symbian OS v9.1, UIQ 3. UIQ is basically  User Interface Quartz. Essentially this is a graphical user interface layer that provides additional components to the core OS to develop 3rd party applications. Native applications can be written in C++ using the Symbian/UIQ. All UIQ-based phones (2.x and 3.x) also support Java applications. UIQ phones employ touch screens. The phone has a 3.15 MP camera, 2048×1536 pixels, autofocus, video, flash; secondary VGA videocall camera. The camera is quite nice and much better that the 2MP camera which came with the P990.

The other regular features are:

SMS, MMS, Email, Instant Messaging
- Java MIDP 2.0
- Video playback
- FM radio with RDS
- Media Player (MP3, AAC)
- Built-in handsfree

Now this Phone is an excellent BUSINESS PHONE it boasts of

Push email: Instant email on your mobile phone, just like on your home computer. Messages are sent directly to your phone as soon as they arrive.

Business card scanning: Take a photo of a business card. Use the Business Card Reader to scan the text and then save it as a contact

Handwriting Recognition: Text input using stylus on touchscreen: write a character as you would with a pen, and it transforms it into the corresponding letter on a keyboard

iSkoot: Skype on your mobile phone. Make and receive Skype calls, chat and see which buddies that are online.

The phone has 160 MB shared memory 128 MB RAM, 256 MB ROM so all the people scared of installing applications and using the phone to the fullest don’t worry the phone will not let you down it wont hang and it won’t restart on its own.

Battery: The phone comes with a standard battery, Li-Ion 1120 mAh with a Stand-by time of up to 440 hrs and a Talk time of up to 10 hrs. On using this phone it can go upto 1 and half day without charging.

Conclusion it is a well balanced BUISNESS PHONE by Sony Ericsson.
